The world is fractured. Tensions are high, patience is low, and goodwill is hard to come by.
In The Genius of One, author and pastor Greg Holder reminds us of the high value Jesus and his early followers placed on community and offers guidance for how to see and relate to one another in emotionally and spiritually healthy ways so that we, the church, can fulfill Jesus' prayer for us and model a better way of loving one another in a fractured world.
Tracing back to a prayer Jesus prayed on the worst night of his life, "That they" - that we - "would be one", Holder takes his listeners on a winding journey from that glorious prayer to the practical realities of everyday life. For those who cling to the hope that God is still at work, this book will both stir a deeper longing for a better way and provide practical steps toward that way.

The author makes no pretense about perfection, which allows us to learn from his 20 years of experience, nourishing a thriving Christian community that is integrated and engaged. "This is how a team, a community, a church works. How it's supposed to work. And on the good days it does. On one of those not-so-good days when your humanness unleashes its ugliness, this vision of leadership is also how you get back on track.… Because this is the better way. The older-than-ancient way of loving."
And what is "this better way", this "Genius of One"? The cover of the book metaphorically and literally points the way. I must leave it to you to discover the deep truths of the title.
In this excellent book, the author guides and encourages the reader to take a careful look at what the Bible teaches that we must do as individuals, as teammates in our local churches, and as Christ-followers or even Christ-cynics.
For Christ-followers, Holder challenges us to take a self-critical and constructive look at who we are and what we're doing to further the Great Commission in this fractured and increasingly contentious world.
But Holder also invites Christ-cynics to stop rolling their eyes and seriously consider the power of humility that he introduces to us through two young men with developmental disabilities. The genius of this book is that the author takes us on a journey through his life in which he encounters people like these two young men at a baseball game and realizes that God has put them in his life for a purpose.
Beyond his personal life-lessons that make this book so engaging, the author also builds on research about the cultural values of his multi-site church, identifying "creative collaboration" as how the Bible guides us to work together. By moving away from selfish ambition and doing our best to embrace humility, we labor together to meet the spiritual and practical needs of this world beyond the church walls.
For church leaders (and the author makes it clear that everybody on the team has opportunities to lead) this book provides both inspiration and practical guidance on how to keep the community emotionally healthy and growing. "The vulnerable moment of truth" in Chapter 6 is one of the sections that leaders will want to study and discuss and develop the individual and team skills to implement. The author's dual training as a counselor and pastor comes through in sections like this that might be bruising if he didn't lead with his own transparency. But he has the courage to do so, which will give this book legs for many years to come.
This book is an easy read and also challenging because of what the author calls us to do. I found his message to be a breath of fresh ocean air, filling my lungs with hope for the future of the church in America and throughout the world. Don't wait to get started. We need more books like this!
Now, this book couldn't have come at a better time. Headlines of divisiveness and brokenness in our fractured world. Every week. Every day. We seem to be drifting further and further away from each other, even as Christians. Many ask "But what can I do? What can one person do?" Genius of One will show you how MANY are ONE. And with ONE, we have the power to begin to move together. Possibly heal. Possibly begin to understand each other. Listening and truly hearing what each other has to say. Isn't that why we have two ears and one mouth? In the age of social media, we do a lot of "talking" and defending our opinions and thoughts. How about a new approach? Stop and listen. Listen to what "their story is". That is where true understanding, connection and community begin. Church may be in rows, but community is in a circle. And that circle started with 50 white folding chairs. It started with loving God and each other. Greg will walk through Genius of one with is there more to this story? Yes. An ancient way of doing community. But still relevant and needed in today's world.
If you have ever heard any of Greg Holder's messages, you will know he has an amazing way of telling a story. Lifting characters from the Bible and bringing them to life as he speaks. His humor, his cadence, almost like a song and dance as he weaves words into stories that have you clinging to the edge of your seat. Genius of One is many stories...brought to life. And if you REALLY want to get the full-on, head in the wind experience, listen to the Audible version and hear Greg tell the stories that have mesmerized us over the years in those seats at The Crossing.
If you haven't hear of Greg Holder, then read the book. You will be delighted and engaged in every page with is wit and flair for the narrative. You will walk away from the book thinking a bit differently than you did before about how we do community.
I am proud of my pastor, church and where God is leading us. God is on the move!! And together, may we become ONE and find UNITY in commUNITY.
Greg has a unique style of teaching and has mastered how to breakdown the most complicated topics into bite size chunks rich with reference, personal stories, thought provoking statements, deep Biblical knowledge, and practical steps and he ties them all together seamlessly. If you're craving to know what God's answer is to this fractured world - Read. This. Book. You'll end up wanting to read it a few times - it's just that good on so many levels. Also, pick up a few copies to have family or friends read it along with you because in true Greg Holder fashion, he's thrown in several "turn to your neighbor" discussion questions. :)
