I was intrigued by this book when I heard Dr. Foote interviewed on the Art of Manliness podcast. I am so happy to be reading it. As I move through the book, I find myself having those "Aha" moments where the light goes on. So much of the world is based on honor and shame and the various ways of establishing it. It is not something that the "modern" Western worldview understands. More is the pity. Looking back with Dr. Foote at the Union Army and manliness, I feel more equipped to look out toward the world. Dr. Foote's writing style is both engaging and scholarly and not-at-all dry. And, in a fun way, I feel like I understand Westerns and discussions about the West. I recommend this book. And the Art of Manliness podcast.
