Overall, I like this smoker. I've had mine for approximately two years and it's still going strong.

If there is one fault, it's the charcoal box. Simply put....it's terrible. As the other review said, the heat will be smothered by the ash from the charcoal. I put a grate on the bottom of mine and it improved it's performance greatly.

I tend to use wood chunks as opposed to charcoal or use real charcoal (no clay fillers etc.) and have had good results. The commercial charcoals are, by and large, are made for use on a grill....not in a smoker.

If you are a tinker you can certainly modify the charcoal pan and get good results. Get a grate so the ash will fall below the charcoal instead of smothering it. If you'd rather not bother with that, I understand the gas version works well.

I am not a pro, but I have about 7 yrs experience smoking at home.

My first smoker was the basic Brinkmann, they generate pretty amazing results for being so simple.

I upgraded to this smoker about 4 yrs ago.

It is reasonably well made (nothing has broken off). I have little or no rust - I spray with vegetable oil 1-2x per year and pretty much leave it uncovered in the back yard - we get a lot of rain and snow here in the Northeast, no problem.

This smoker is able to go for a long time. Keeping the dampers open to 10-15% means you can smoke for 6 hrs or more. Temps are stable.

Full access to all 3 shelves is priceless. You can easily check on the progress and remove items as they come up to temperature. This thing can swallow a LOT of meat.

The racks and water pans are decent but not stellar quality. I have replaced the racks once, they are reasonably priced but take a while to arrive.

The charcoal pan is not the greatest, but a $4 circular wire cooling rack raises the charcoal up 1 inch off the bottom and allows air circulation and gives a spot for the ashes to fall.

I have always used quality lump charcoal (available at many grocery stores, or Depot or Walmart in the summer season). Briquettes are mostly inert and only meant for cooking burgers and steaks. Find decent hardwood charcoal and chunks of clean hardwood and you'll be in for a treat.

It's not perfect but it has served me well for a long time, and the 16 guys that I smoke for at the baseball and footbal fantasy drafts certainly dig the ribs, brisket, sausage and chicken this thing cranks out.

Stop thinking about it and do it. It's easy.

Update: Year 9, just smoked for the Super Bowl. Still going! Have had to have my father in law make replacement stainless racks, as I can no longer find support for this model on the web.

I love to smoke different kinds of food and have been doing so for years and have always looked for better more useful smokers that are not too large and cumbersome. This one fits the bill. Vertical smokers are great, I can place a Turkey and two Chickens at one time in the smoker. The water bath in the bottom above the coals keeps your meat moist and helps deliver the smoke flavor into the meat when it becomes steam. It has a great temperature guage to keep tabs on your cooking temperature while smoking the meat. The front opening door alows you to reload the charcoal, add more water, baste or adjust the meat as needed with minimal hassle. There is one size larger which I also own and would recommend as well.

Just bought and am finding it hard to get temp to a even 250. Firebox clogs with ashes and cools charcoal. Large chunks of hardwood help raise temp. I will probably make a cyndrical firebox with vent holes at bottom to allow better burning of charcoal. Go with a LP version or another smoaker.

I ordered this smoker not too long ago and have used it a few times since i recieved it. it only took about a week to get here and set up took about an hour. obviousely this rig isnt for a professional, but if you are an amature into good smoked meats and BBQ this is definately for you. i only have two noteworthy complaints, but they are outweighed by the good.

1. Since the smoker is made of a rather thin metal it doesnt hold the heat in very well. you can get an insulator cover for it, but i just refresh my coals every 2.5 hours or so.
2. the charcoal pan eventually smothers the fire because it doesnt allow air to circulate under the coals. this is easily fixed by buying a grate to put over the pan and piling the coals on the grate. buying the grate is the inconvenience. also, a charcoal chimney might be a good buy too.

other than those two things, i would recomend this to anyone who likes quality home smoked meats.

Have owned this smoker for 3 years now. No problems due to it's simple construction. We do keep it out of the elements so it's held up quite well. I'm not too sure it would have had it been left outdoors.

It's big. Holds a LOT of food! Down side is when you open to check meat, the temp really drops. Held a couple chickens and like 10 racks of ribs. Too big to fire up for just one rack of ribs or a chicken so make sure you have a lot of meat to smoke. We've made our T-day turkey in this thing for a few years now. Oh and we liked the first one we bought so much, we bought a second one AND a third one for my fathers retirement gift! He loves it as much as we do.
