A excellent movie of deception, betrayal, intrigue, sex, and even love finds its way in.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 1, 2023
An excellent movie. I loved the cinematography - the scenery, the interiors, the costumes, all extremely well done. The acting was superb. The storyline - well, it had so many twists and turns, I am glad they did a repeat of certain scenes in part III to remind us of how well set up this incredibly intricately spun web of deceit was done by the characters. Too much nudity? soft porn? I dont think so - except for may the very last scene of the two ladies totally naked and having sex on the ship. I would have thought a moment on the ship under the moon and stars and an intimate embrace or kiss would have done just as well. The rest of the sex and sexual innuendo - necessary - as was the cruelty and torture, even though it was hard to watch. That is why it was necessary. It is very much a victory for the ladies. no matter which side of society they were born into - nobility or poverty - they were supposed to get screwed over in a totally male dominated society. But these ladies won in the end. Loved it! This was an excellent movie. highly recommend.

visually beautiful, super love the ending.

Wow! I have watched this film a couple of times now, and upon each rewatch I get more and more out of it. I do not expect anything less from the director of Oldboy.
The whole movie plays like a fairytale, and books play an important role in both the plot and the aesthetic of this movie. Scenes are framed like book illustrations, and the cuts/transitions give you the illusion of turning the page. Even the way the movie is structured (part I, part II, part III) gave the viewer the sense of flipping through a novel.
The film tells a wonderful and empowering tale of two women finding companionship, liberation, and love. This love transcends seemingly insurmountable obstacles such as the horrible circumstances they were born into, their class structures, and their nationalities (Japanese vs Korean...very big deal at this time period). Park Chan Wook packs every scene with incredible amounts of detail to develop these characters and to bring us into this world. For example in one particular scene, three characters were eating a bento, and the two lower class characters were scarfing down their food while the "lady" ate her rice slowly grain by grain. This movie was never self-indulgent, and every detail/fancy shot/moment of the score furthered the aims of this film. Even the way this movie ended and transitioned into the credits was incredible--it looked like the closing of a storybook.
In one of Park Chan Wook's interviews for this film, he mentioned Hitchcock's Vertigo (beautiful masterpiece+Sight and Sound Critics' #1 film), and how some of those scenes influenced him. That influence really shows here!
It is unfortunate that many viewers were not prepared for the more mature elements of this movie and found it offensive and pornographic, but everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, and this movie is definitely not without shock value. However, the shock here is a central component to the story. The intimate scenes between the characters illustrate their bond--much like in real life (sex can strengthen intimacy...and it did so here because it's a love story). The dark themes shown in this movie is necessary because it heightens the contrast when it is juxtaposed next to the purity and beauty of the characters' love. It's definitely not family friendly, but it's also one of the most beautiful movies I've seen in a very long time. I cannot wait to see the Director's Cut!

The movie is really in two parts. The first part sets up the scheme and how it is expected to go, and the second part is the scheme and did it go as expected. There is a lot of repeated scenes from part one in part two, a bit of padding of the time. It is actually quite clever and to say more would give spoilers. But there is reference to the basement, and when you later see it, you understand why you don’t want to be there. For the ending, simply “jingle bells”! A movie with twists and turns that make it fun.

Absolutely stunning, disturbing, beautiful, and thought provoking. I look forward to watching this movie again.

To say it's nothing but gratuitous smut would be erroneous. Actually, this movie took me by surprise. I decided to watch it because I own a copy of both Old Boy and Lady Vengeance and I liked both movies. Like this movie, those movies dug into some uncomfortable topics. I cannot help but roll my eyes at some of the comments and wonder if the ones dumping on this movie because of the nudity and sex would have even blinked at the gratuitous violence in Old Boy and Lady Vengeance. To me, this is no less discomfiting on that level, just that in America we give violence a lot more leeway because we are desensitized to it. It does get male gazey, I will give the naysayers that.(hence the missing star) It just wasn't enough to distract me from the story. If you are easily bothered by that or don't like smut in general, you may not care for this movie - BUT, you could absolutely skip those scenes and it would not make much if any difference to the story. I'm not denying that it's smut. It is. Inescapably. I just don't see why that automatically makes it bad.
I like the two main characters and I like how misleading the story was. A few times I thought this story was going in one direction only for it to dive and dip and take another. And somehow, it still made sense to me in the end. I feel like I could watch this movie again and catch things that I missed. To me, that's always been a huge selling point to the rewatch value of any movie. Good movie to sit and watch with a warm drink while you try to figure out the double and triple crossing that goes on.

Sometimes the trailers they show on amazon don't do it justice. Was a little skeptical in watching this movie but risked it because it had great reviews. Very great acting and writing. Kept me captivated throughout the whole two hour movie. Some people on the reviews are projecting regarding the explicit sex scenes and tbh y'all have to get over it. It basically shows a lesbian sex scene. Many movies for many years now have shown explicit heterosexual sex scenes. No one ever comments on them. It's seen as normal. I'm glad they showed more diversity in the sex realm. I found it quite informative. We have to desensitize these types of scenes as we have with heterosexual sex scenes. The people who are commenting on it are not as open minded. It is 2022 not 1922. lol

Brilliant intrigue

Absolutely brilliant. A three parter that has the unwary going from one assumption to another, and the final outcome is little short of brilliant. How this has slipped through must only be because of the fact it is not English language. A disgusting fact if ever l met one.

Intelligent, sexy, mysterious, emotional, surprising but above aethetically beautiful, this film is wonderfully suited to viewers who appreciate high quality in the cinema. I shall give no spoilers, as an important part of it's charm is how it keeps the viewer guessing all the way. Loved it.

I didnt care for the BBC version of the book [far too twee and Dickensian ] but this is a classic ; odd , dark , erotic , complicated , visually beautiful , unfolding surprises with tricks and twists and something hidden in the basement which is far from nice.
