Scrap paper is more valuable

As the title says, if you are thinking of buying this translation you would be better served to reach into your waste basket and recover a few blank pages from it.

There are two problems with this translation. An annoyance and an abomination.

The annoyance is that the promise of a trilingual text is false. The advertizing for the translation claims the original Tibetan and Sanskrit versions are included. This is true. However, both are romanized. Making them (and thus half the book) unreadable for the people who actually understand the languages. Over half the book is waste paper.

The abomination . . . well, I'll just quote from the preface. "Occasional abbreviations in the English text were induced on account of personal distaste or possibly from fear of scandalizing the members of the editorial board" He continues on to attack the authors of the original text for writing about sexual matters and boasting that he has improved the original text by censoring and sanitizing it, giving many examples.

In other words, the translator has greatly censored his own translation. The text has been butchered. And as romanized Tibetan and Sanskrit are unreadable to everyone except for 'scholars' like the translator, the paper this book was printed on is more valuable than the words printed on it.

Avoid this translation like you would avoid the Bubonic plague.

For readers looking into this title in interests of finding a reliable English translation I would recommend Farrow and Menon's

As already noted by a previous reviewer, David Snellgrove's translation of this text contains several instances of censorship by Snellgrove, making it an unreliable translation overall. For readers looking into this title in interests of finding a reliable English translation I would recommend Farrow and Menon's translation in "The Concealed Essence of the Hevajra Tantra", being a much better choice than this book.

The second volume of Snellgrove's translation provides romanized versions of the original text in Sanskrit and Tibetan, side by side. This is primarily the reason of my purchasing a copy of Snellgrove's book, since the Farrow/Menon translation only contains a romanized Sanskrit version. As a clarificatory note, since I found a reviewer's comment on the romanized versions being "unreadable" to be a potentially misleading remark, I think it is worth noting that the Sanskrit and Tibetan versions are completely readable, provided the reader is acquainted with IAST Sanskrit transliteration and Tibetan transliteration schemes such as Wylie.

Based on the observations made above, I will give this book 2 stars in this review, considering it primarilly a source for getting a Sanskrit and Tibetan version of Hevajra Tantra, in volume 2.
