About the author

Jeffrey Robinson (born 1945) is a native New Yorker who lived in Europe from 1970 to 2007, including 25 years in London. The author of 30 books, Robinson was labeled by the British Bankers' Association "the world's leading financial crime author."
Born in Long Beach, NY, Robinson is a graduate of Philadelphia's Temple University (1967). While still at school, he wrote for television and radio, including a popular weekly children's show and was on the writing staff of The Mike Douglas Show, a nationally televised daily talk show. He continued working in the media during his four year stint as an officer in the United States Air Force. Charged with running a press and public relations office for five generals at the height of the Vietnam War, he hosted a weekly Tv talk show, scripted and directed several film projects, wrote short stories for national magazines and moonlighted as a disc jockey on local radio.
When his military obligation was completed at the end of 1970, he took up residence in a small village in the south of France. Using that as his base, he vagabonded around the world, writing articles and short stories for leading North American and British periodicals. In Britain his feature journalism has appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Independent, the Sunday Express and the Mail on Sunday, among others. His US magazine credits include Playboy, McCalls, Barron's, Gourmet, True Magazine, Ambassador, Mademoiselle, Reader's Digest and TV Guide; while his US newspaper credits include The Washington Post, The San Francisco Examiner, The Christian Science Monitor and The International Herald Tribune (for which he was a major contributor of features during the 1970s).
He moved to Britain in 1982, with more than 600 published stories and articles to his credit, to concentrate on writing books. In 2007, he returned to New York and now divides his time between the US and the UK.
Non-fiction
Robinson is internationally known for his 1995 investigative tour de force, The Laundrymen, in which he uncovered the true extent of global money laundering. The book reveals how hundreds of billions of dirty dollars are derived mainly from the drug trade, then reinvested throughout the world by otherwise legitimate businessmen, lawyers, accountants and bankers. Considered the definitive book on the subject, and now used in universities and law schools as a text, Business Week described it as "[a]n indictment of governments and banks".
A headline-maker in 14 countries around the world, and a Number 1 bestseller in the UK, Robinson scripted and hosted several television documentaries on the back of The Laundrymen, including one for the BBC, and another for Arte in France and Germany.
In 1998, he published a sequel to The Laundrymen, titled The Merger - How Organized Crime is Taking Over The World. In it, Robinson revealed the disturbing lengths that transnational organized criminals go in order to build multi-national corporations; explained why organized crime is the major beneficiary of globalization; and illustrated how transnational organized criminals have become the most powerful special interest group on the planet.
Five years later he published yet another book in this series: The Sink, about crime, terrorism and dirty money in the offshore world. In it he called the City of London one of the world's greatest laundromats for dirty money.
Between 1986-1994, he published three major best-selling biographies: Yamani - The Inside Story, about Saudi Arabia's former Minister of Oil Ahmed Zaki Yamani; Rainier & Grace, the only legitimate biography ever written about, and with the cooperation of, Monaco's sovereign family (and subsequently republished in 2014 as "Grace of Monaco") ; and Bardot - Two Lives, also unique in that it was written with the cooperation of French icon, Brigitte Bardot.
His other non-fiction titles include: The Risk Takers (his first UK best seller) which highlighted the high-fliers of City finance, recounting their tales of money, ego and power; The Minus Millionaires, the off-beat sequel to The Risk Takers, in which he told stories about 'risk takers' who had lost fortunes; The End of the American Century, for which Robinson gained access to secret archives in the former Soviet Union to reveal the hidden agendas of the Cold War; The Hotel, stories gathered over five months as a fly on the wall in what is, arguably, the best hotel in the world; The Manipulators - A Conspiracy to Make Us Buy, exposing the marketing world's "hidden persuaders" 40 years after Vance Packard; and Prescription Games, an insider's view of the global pharmaceutical industry, where science and marketing are deliberately kept apart and where, all too often, profit dictates who lives and who dies.
In 2005, he wrote his first "as told to" with an old college friend, Joseph Petro: Standing Next to History - An Agent's Life Inside the Secret Service. Two years later, in 2007, Robinson ghost-wrote Ronnie Wood's autobiography, documenting Wood's years as a rock star and member of the most famous band in the world, The Rolling Stones. In 2009, he published his third "as told to": Leading From The Front, co-written with British entrepreneur and philanthropist, Gerald Ronson.
Robinson's book, There's a Sucker Born Every Minute - A Revelation Of Audacious Frauds, Scams, And Cons -- How To Spot Them, How To Stop Them, is a treatise on fraud.
While, The Takedown - A Suburban Mom, A Coal Miner's Son and the Unlikely Demise of Colombia's Brutal Norte Valle Cartel tells the dramatic story of two people's 15 year adventure to bring down the most violent cocaine cartel of all.
He has also published three eBooks: Jeffrey Robinson's Criminal Intent - Following the Money (a mini-treatise on dirty money) Jeffrey Robinson's Criminal Intent - The Swiss Wash Whiter, about the hypocrisy of secret Swiss banking; and BitCon-The Naked Truth About Bitcoin, which has, controversially, debunked the myth and the mythology of the cryptocurrency.
Fiction
Jeffrey Robinson has also written six much-praised novels: Pietrov and Other Games; The Ginger Jar; The Margin of the Bulls; The Monk's Disciples; A True and Perfect Knight, and Trump Tower, a romp through the lives of the rich who live at the most famous address on New York's Fifth Avenue.
Radio and television
Often seen as an American commentator on Sky News, Robinson has also appeared on BBC News, BBC Breakfast, BBC Newsnight, BBC World, ITN, Channel 4 News, in addition to NBC News, ABC News, CNN, Fox News, CBC, CNBC, NBC's The Today Show and Bloomberg Television.
He has scripted and hosted various series for BBC Radio, including one on American soap operas and another on the classic radio stars, Amos and Andy. His radio play "Rossum's Cyber Cafe" was a BBC Radio Drama of the Week.
His conceived and wrote the pilot for the British crime drama series, "Tightrope" for Yorkshire Television, and then completed the pilot episode for a British series on financial crime called "Follow The Money." Other television scripts include Sister Banjo and Notice of Claim. He has scripted a film version of his biography of Brigitte Bardot, called Bardot; and a made-for-television movie version of Standing Next to History, a dramatic re-telling of the special relationship between the president of the United States (Ronald Reagan) and his Secret Service agent (Joseph Petro), called Ronnie & Joe. He has also begun scripting the television version of his book, Takedown.
Robinson won the 1990 Benedictine Award as "After-Dinner Speaker of the Year".

It's important to understand even though the book was updated in 2009, this is very much a book of the 1990s. The updates that occurred after it was originally written appear to be adding additional content to some chapters such as the well done nineteenth chapter that deals with the Mexican drug cartels. However, the new version of the book is not a complete revision of the previous work. In most cases, such a revision would not have been necessary which is likely why the author left them largely untouched. Even though the case studies are sometimes decades old, the concepts are still very valuable in developing an understanding of the present environment. This is a book that appears to stand the test of time quite well.
If the author were ever to conduct a more extensive update of the book, I would like to see expanded coverage of present day issues such as hawalah and 419 type schemes. These topics are touched upon in the book, but not in much depth. I would also like to see him delve into topics such as Islamic banking and Black Market Peso Exchange.
This review pertains to the book as it appears on the Kindle. With this Kindle edition, there were a variety of distracting spelling errors and font changes that might not appear in the print version of the book. The spelling errors appeared to be classic spell check issues where, for example, in one portion of the chapter six where the author is talking about flying from one point to the other, the word used is "file" instead of "fly". The font changes were apparent both on my 2nd generation Kindle and Kindle for PC. While it did not make the book unreadable, it was an unnecessary distraction.

This book was an absorbing, gripping read.
The book is arranged as a series of very detailed descriptions of large scale criminal enterprises and the investigations and stings to bring them down.
It isn't really about money-laundering specifically, but about the crime and criminal enterprises that both rely on and support money-laundering activity. That makes some sense, as the author is keen to stress, money laundering is the life blood of most other crimes as well as a crime itself and to understand it properly we need really to understand where the money is coming from and the consequences of the criminals succeeding in their laundry.
What the book doesn't do is give away much technical explanation of what money laundering is or how it is carried out. Just enough is provided to understand the nature of most of the operations detailed, and how they came to be exposed. More might have been interesting, but probably would have made the book a bit turgid.
What is given are wonderfully researched and engagingly written essays about some very well known operations (Brinx Matt, Central American drug cartels) and some remarkably interesting lesser known ones (Saddam Hussien disposing of his Kuwaiti spoils).
It gives plenty of examples, the mechanics of ML in an accesible manner.
I think I read this about 20 years ago but it still seems to be relevant.
Essential reading either if you are in law enforcement or want to avoid getting caught!
