The Legend of Zorro Mass Market Paperback – September 27, 2005
THE LEGEND LIVES ON!
Zorro behind the mask is a daring defender of freedom and justice, wielding sword and whip with unparalleled skill in defense of the common people’s cause.
Zorro without the mask is Don Alejandro de la Vega, wealthy landowner and as much of a family man as his charge will allow.
As California stands on the brink of statehood, Alejandro is not sure who he will be when the need for the mask fades, but his lovely wife, Elena, is certain he will be the devoted husband and father she and their son, Joaquin, have patiently waited for.
But ruthless men in a deadly conspiracy of power have different ideas. As they threaten the future of a still-young nation, they also set Alejandro’s two lives in collision, drawing his beloved Elena into a perilous world of shadows and lies. Could the mask ultimately cost the one they call Zorro everything and everyone he holds most dear?
Or will the Zorro legacy and de la Vega family prevail?

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2012Who is better than Zorro? This guy is one of my all-time heroes, and the stories about him are pure inspiration. Just take a look at the cover to know if you're a woman, down-trodden, or in need, he'll help. Settle down on your couch and cozy up to this some evening and you'll see what I mean.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2014I have always been a ZORRO fan and when these movies about THE FOX came out the first thing I did was order the screenplay adaptions through AMAZON.COM. If you love the movie you will really enjoy the novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2005As a huge fan of "Legend Of Zorro," I decided to pick up this book, if only because often what was cut from the movie makes it within the novelizations. The book does mention, or bring up, a number of points not in the movie that, when watching the movie, crossed my mind (one of which being how did Alejandro and Elena make their fortune, given all that had happened in "The Mask Of Zorro"?).
Overall, however, the author's over-usage of flowery metaphor in an attempt to show the romantic and fierce love between Alejandro and Elena was actually distracting. As a reader of romance novels, I don't say that lightly. The cliched metaphors don't end there, and one feels they are reading nearly "purple prose" fan fiction, in many passages of the novelization, rather than adult male writing a serious novelization of a movie/movie script. While I want to read a novelization that is more "fleshed out" than what I may see at the theatres, I simply found myself wincing at the verbose descriptions and the odd way the author created "diaries" throughout the book to show different points of view of the characters. I found these unnecessary and a further distraction. I can only surmise that the novelization is intended for teenage girls, except that I found my copy in the section for film and theatre books/biographies.
Overall, the novelization is a good way to "fill in the blanks" for a true fan of the movie, but not a good way for someone who has yet to see the movie(s) to become acquainted with it. The saccharine nature of some of the writing can be hard to swallow.
