A perfect combination of Scott Westerfield's writing and Keith Thompson's art to introduce the reader to the intricate alternate world war 1 in which the series proper takes place. It's a little short for a world bible, but the excellence of the art within more than makes up for it.

Although Westerfeld is the originator, Thompson's illustrations are one of the joys of reading this series. This companion foregrounds Thompson's brilliant contributions by taking a more technical perspective on the worlds of the Darwinists and the Clankers, rather than dramatically illustrating moments from the novels. I enjoyed this alternative perspective on the extraordinary world created for these novels. Westerfeld's descriptions are at times fairly sparse so the details have been marvelously filled in by Thompson. The result is stunning. I am surprised that any fan of the series could be disappointed, except in the book's length. All we need now are some more stories set in this fantastic alternative steampunk world.

It's not as thick as I had been expecting, but it's still great to see the art from the Leviathan trilogy in full color. This will be a great reference to page through every so often to get the feel of the world.

Filled to the brim with the gorgeous, distinctive artwork of the very talented Mr. Keith Thompson along with setting commentary from Westerfeld himself, the only failing of this book is that it is way, way too slim. Personally, I'd happily shill out my hard-earned money for way more material of this kind (being an absolute sucker for design diaries) as well as a whole book of larger reproductions of all of Thompson's art from the book trilogy.
Yes, that is a promise!

I loved the trilogy and I loved this book really added more information in my attic about the beasties. It's a good book, very well colored. All the beasties and even the Clanker things as well explained. I couldn't be happier. If you are a true Leviathan fan you ought to get this book.

My son loved this series of books. He would show me the black and white illustrations as he was reading through each book. I bought him this after he had read them all. I was afraid it was too late, but he loves the book and the illustrations. I enjoy looking through the images too. It is very well crafted and designed.

It was good to see what the author was trying so hard to explain! To bad it's a bit to short. Could of had more info about some places the book was referring to and they completely forgot about Goliath.

This volume gives the reader the last piece that could have been considered "missing" from the Leviathan Trilogy. Containing schematics, diagrams, and illustrations, this book brings to life the critical creations in Westerfeld's Steampunk masterpiece. The art of Keith Thompson, so beautifully used in the novels, returns to create a critical companion book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential if you love the series
Reviewed in Brazil on February 7, 2019
Very good for those who love the series, covers all the main figures of the book giving a more immersive experience.
Only point that turned my down a little is the lack of secondary art, like landscapes, characters, the diving suit Deryn uses in the Behemoth is not there and so on.
Despite this if you are a fan you should buy it. I spent almost 5 minutes just freaking out just with the back cover art.

3.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on March 21, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Eine wunderbare Ergänzung zur Reihe!
Reviewed in Germany on August 26, 2016
