Probably if I had bought this as a book rather than an ebook, I would have been able to tell there wasn't much to it. I gave it two stars because it does encourage the dog owner to be conscious of the dog as a fellow being, but it doesn't really have much insight other than that.

This thoughtful book takes a good look at how dogs behave according to our emotions, behavior, and our best intentions. Lori does a good job of using eastern philosophy to illustrate how dogs live in the "here and now," and that we can better understand them with this in mind. I found it a little mystifying to pinpoint the particular traits of a "mindful" dog owner, but this was clarified to some extent with the statement: `The path of mindful dog ownership combines Three Cs: Calmness, Clarity, and Consistency'. The Mindful Dog Owner has taken a philosophy - a way of life - and brought it to the space that exists between us and our canine companions. After reading this book, I noticed that I pay a little more attention to my walks with my little terrier, Oscar. I try to imagine how he is experiencing our shared time and his wonder at the many sight and smells we encounter along an ordinary sidewalk. The ideas in the book cannot be put into practice overnight, but are magnificent reminders to cultivate our own peaceful paths in harmony with our dearest friends, our dogs.

Sound Hound Advice!

As the owner of a very demanding, energetic, and LOUD Bluetick Coonhound, I was grateful to
come across The Mindful Dog Owner. I needed to be reminded that despite patience and training and exercise, dogs will be dogs.

Maintaining a sense of humor and a playful attitude (child-like mind) can do wonders for human-dog relations. This insightful book reinforced why I adopted Daisy in the first place--she teaches me new tricks! For dogs each day is a clean slate, full of opportunity and exciting smells. I endeavor to be more doglike in my ways.

A "dogosphical" read

As a dog trainer and someone who volunteers regularly in shelters, it should be required reading for anyone thinking of getting a dog. This book is an eye-opener for any dog owner and should be shared with anyone who still thinks of a dog as "just a dog". Expressing to those people how to live through a day seeing with the eyes of a dog; teaching them a new skill for the simple joy of learning something useful, feeling the unconditional love for another simply because "they are". Make the commitment to being a mindful dog owner, and you are committing yourself to a simpler, more joy-filled, way of being and living with your companions. Loved this thoughtful book!

As a fellow dog trainer, I enjoyed this book and how it reawakened me to how dogs see their world. A lot of wonderful information packed into a short book! Lots of food for thought too!
