- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2017This is another of Tranter's Excellent novels from Scottish History in this case the English Civil war in the middle of the 17th Century.
James Graham 1st Marquess of Montrose was one of the Most successful Generals on the Royalist side and a man of strong principals
fighting loyally for his king until betrayed by him and executed as a traitor but later rehabilitated and buried with honour in Edinburgh's
St.Giles Cathedral. This is actually a combined edition of two novels covering Montrose's life

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2018James Graham, marquis of Montrose, sided with the royalists--supporting King Charles I during the Scottish Civil War, 1643-1650. Author Nigel Tranter weaves together political and military drama with a level of period detail that draws the reader into the story and few writers match him in this regard. Montrose comes alive as a principled young man who rises above the intrigue of the era only to fall but his achievements make him one of Scotland's great heroes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 1998Montrose was a patriot who sacrificed his family, his wealth, his land, and ultimately, his life in the service of his king. As commander of the royalist forces, Montrose and his small band of followers won a series of battles against the larger, better equipped Convanant forces. Tranter carefully describes the battle sites and tactics, bringing Montrose to life as a brilliant tactian. Stubbornly maintaining his loyalty to a king that didn't deserve it, Montrose is a tragic, yet admired figure in the history of Scotland.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2007Montrose is now a veteran military leader and political figure. This can be a problem in such political systems, as monarchs then feel threatened by popular leaders with talented armies who are not them. He makes more than one head of a country very nervous.
Montrose falls victim to this, while still trying to serve his country, whether with local armies, or mercenaries, or others.

Paul ReynoldsReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 25, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Compelling historical fiction
These are a very true-to-life depiction, though historical fiction, of Montrose's life. The dialogue is convincing, and the characters are well-drawn. The author sticks fairly closely to the established fact, though allows himself some degree of dramatic license. Definitely worth a look if historical fiction or Montrose is an interest.

Great book on a great and interesting character from Scottish history. Tranter was skilled at weaving historical fact around his novels. Read many of his book years ago and I'm enjoying re-reading on kindle.
