I've been in the self help world for a while. Still, there are a lot of things to be learnt from this book.

I liked Nick's honesty and vulnerability in describing both his shortcomings (he's no "I can do everything" guru) and his successes. I personally know about myself that I respond to the same kind of motivations that motivate him - daily reporting, pretty graphs, putting money on the line.

But the biggest thing for me was to learn about Success Spirals. It's all about the little successes if you want to create a few long lasting change. I've started applying to myself. I've had no problem (ok that's an underestimation) training to run a marathon... But getting myself to floss everyday? Do fitness daily? Bake social activities into work?

I've got 8 tiny habits going on now and I feel so much more in control of my life - and I know they will only grow.

I recommend further reading on this topic at BJ Foggs site - lookup "tiny habits" in Google.

And yeah - buy the book. Top 10 books I've bought in terms of positive effects on my life... I read about 200 :)

And thanks Nick for writing it.

The book reads more like a coming off age, where the hero shakes off old habits and steps into his new role, than like a guide. If you're expecting concrete technique descriptions and plans, you'll be disappointed. But this book inspires, is based off of solid science, and is entertaining. Definitely worth the price.

Personally, this book inspired me to get a little crazy. I always thought super achievement required giving up balance - that you can't be number #1 and still have a life. Nick showed me wrong.

This book is perfect for the self-hacker who likes specific examples and hard data. Nick offers some great strategies for tricking yourself out of procrastination and includes some entertaining anecdotes of his own adventures as a motivation hacker. Following Nick's example, I've started Beeminding all of my habits religiously (beeminder.com) and have taken a more thoughtful, quantified approach to managing my work and my life. If you want to squeeze every last drop of learning and adventure out of your short time in this universe, read this book.

Amazing results ...
Nick has got amazing results.

Anyone who wants to make a big impact on their own lives or on the world and is ready for a rewarding challenge, this book will provide all the levers you need to reach your goals.

I find that Nick has deeper and more profound understanding that anybody else I've read or met and he's leveraged and layered motivation to maximize results.

Please see the above comment in light of the fact that I became a best-selling author of a DOS book (Waite Group/Macmillan) in 1990 when I worked in Silicon Valley, and since then I've written a few books with the goal of "changing life" of the reader. Two of books have helped over 500,000 students, so I do know a bit about motivation.

Now, I have added extra goals without taking away from main goals. This book will help you do the same.

The biggest problem you may face is the fact that all of us are very lazy. We watch football, baseball and basket ball, but most of us don't play. We are just happy to cheer our teams.

By the way, I just sent a paperback to my daughter who's in 6th grade, and I am asking her to check it out. I'll report back here if and how she changes because of this powerful book.

Get the book. He's also kind enough to price it just $2.99.

A really enjoyable help book. Nick is an amazing guy, I totally depended on Skritter when I was living in China and Code Combat is an awesome idea. So I know he is someone who can get things done, and seeing the goals he put together for 3 months and what he accomplished is inspiring. However the most important part of the motivation hacker is the clarity he helps provide on improving your motivation and reasons why to do it.

Not all of the techniques he puts forth are applicable to everyone but a lot are worth a try and he refreshing style in presenting the tools and approaches makes this a more more genuine help book than much that is out there. Highly recommended.

I like Nick's blog, but this book puts everything together in a way many blogger books don't quite manage. Great mix of QS and applied rationality, with stories that serve his points.

Overall, probably 3-4 times the value of an average self-help book, at 1/3 - 1/4 of the price, for at least an order of magnitude of betterness. Nice work! (You should buy it, whoever you are.)

I'm only 40 or so pages into this book but so far it seems to be very good quality material. For me, it's a better written and more accessible summary of some material that I've read before in blog posts and longer, more detailed but also more tedious books (ie The Procrastination Equation). I do have some concern about the accessibility of the material for varied audiences - as an example, I can imagine giving this book to my mom or my younger sister and having them just not "get" it.

From what I've read so far I've been recommending this book to other self hacking geeks and if I find more good material in the book and/or find that my own motivation and productivity increase or improve I will likely post a more detailed review here and further recommend the book.
