The Night Stalker Hardcover – August 1, 2011

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 8,203 ratings

An unidentified female body is brought into the Los Angeles County morgue. The cause of death is still unclear. Her body bares no marks; except for the fact that her most intimate parts have been stitched shut. But what shocks the pathologist the most is that the killer had left something inside her. Something so monstrous Detective Robert Hunter, of the Los Angeles Homicide Special Section, has to be pulled off a different case to take over the investigation.
Within days a new body surfaces. Like the previous victim, she's also been stitched shut and something has been left inside her. Something as ingenious as it is grotesque. And the killer isn't done yet, not by a long shot.

When his inquiry collides with a missing persons' case being investigated by the attractive, razor-sharp Whitney Meyers, Hunter suspects the killer might be keeping several women hostage. Soon Robert finds himself on the hunt for a murderer who is much more monstrous than he ever could have expected; a predator whose past hides a terrible secret, and who won't stop until each of his victims has brought forth the awful truth

If you like bloody, ultra-violent crimes, then this book is your favorite story. It has interesting story plot, the pace is good, the plot has enough twists to keep you reading and wanting to finish it.

The write has a background of criminal psychology and experience in that field and you can see that in his writing and his cases. He can describe the most violent crimes from the point of view of the police investigators. The killers are not flat stereotypes, but they have a multifaceted background.

I must admit I do like the "who done it" aspect of this series. But I am just amazed at the imagination (hopefully it is imagination and not based on fact!) of Chris Carter. How does he conjure up such gruesome ways to murder someone???
I am currently reading the fourth in the series, not thinking too much on the "gruesomeness" but on the twists and turns of the story and the developing characters.
However, why are words such as "got to", "want to", "kind of" replaced constantly with gotta, wanna, kinda?
Poetic licence at times, said in context at times...but all the time??? Sorry, just a bit annoying.
But, I will read the whole series!

This is the first book that I have read of this author, but will certainly not be the last,

The Night Stalker commences with a rush on page one and does not let up until the last page. It is the type of book that you can immerse yourself in and block out everything around you.

Well done to the author in writing such a great read.

Oh Chris.....you did it again. Kept me up late all night reading your book. I could not put it down. Over 400 pages in 2 nights. These stories jump out at you and keep you turning the pages saying "just one more chapter". Sick twisted plot as usual. Best serial killer stories EVER!!!!

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was I've read his other books and was expecting the same intensity and this one didn't compare to The Executioner or The Crucifix, but it is still a very good read! Once you've opened the book, be prepared to sit still for a while because you won't want to put it down.

I didn't want to put the book down. It's obvious that Chris Carter has a background in criminal psychology; I was hooked on every word from beginning to end. I loved it. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes detective/serial killer books. I am off to buy his new book now.

Could have done without the James Smith and the Whitney Whoever characters. Otherwise, it was okay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and tense

Just wow! Faster paced and tense and impossible to figure out who the killer was!
I was hesitant going in as this is the third book in the series and sure there were small mentions of stuff from the previous books but nothing to the point where you are confused so I would say it could be a standalone.
I am terrible with finishing series but this may be one I actually finish!

Hunter and crew get involved in a case where the murderer stitches his victims lips and vaginas shut with cord after inserting various devices to ensure their demise after he leaves. Definitely not for the squeamish. A good story from this amazing story teller.
