An unidentified female body is brought into the Los Angeles County morgue. The cause of death is still unclear. If you like bloody, ultra-violent crimes, then this book is your favorite story. It has interesting story plot, the pace is good, the plot has enough twists to keep you reading and wanting to finish it.

The write has a background of criminal psychology and experience in that field and you can see that in his writing and his cases. He can describe the most violent crimes from the point of view of the police investigators. The killers are not flat stereotypes, but they have a multifaceted background.

I must admit I do like the "who done it" aspect of this series. But I am just amazed at the imagination (hopefully it is imagination and not based on fact!) of Chris Carter. How does he conjure up such gruesome ways to murder someone???
I am currently reading the fourth in the series, not thinking too much on the "gruesomeness" but on the twists and turns of the story and the developing characters.
However, why are words such as "got to", "want to", "kind of" replaced constantly with gotta, wanna, kinda?
Poetic licence at times, said in context at times...but all the time??? Sorry, just a bit annoying.
But, I will read the whole series!

I was hesitant going in as this is the third book in the series and sure there were small mentions of stuff from the previous books but nothing to the point where you are confused so I would say it could be a standalone.
