Before you buy this book make sure you also buy at the same time "The Out of Sync Child has Fun."

Why , because you need both - The first book presents lots of different case studies but is strategy poor.
Book 2 , Has Fun , is jammed packed full of activities.

Four Stars because you have to buy both....looking for an alternative / another view try Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Integration Issues This is the Bible.... a must have.

My child's teacher let me borrow this book after some concerns about some sensory issues he was having. This book clearly lays out senses, their function and better yet examples of normal SI and sensory dysfunction. Although my child is not on the spectrum where he would be considered to have SID, the book provided me with an understanding as to why he seems to be sensory driven in everything he does. With the knowledge from this book, I can now "feed him a better sensory diet" as opposed to continue on with my frustrations. The book also has A TON of resources for those children who may need further evaluations.

This book was recommended to me by an Occupational Therapist after he evaluated my son through the state. At this point, I had no idea what SI was or that my son had it (also autism diagnosis). Since then, this book has become my primary resource for my son and other children I encounter. I've given copies to every member of my family and to my son's teachers. Why? Because it explains why kids do and act the way they do when they have sensory dysfunction.

One thing my son used to do was put his head on the ground to look at toys. He also used to avoid touching paint, glue, playDoh. He couldn't tolerate a playground and even family birthday parties were overwhelming. This book explains all of these things - all of the reasons why my son was acting the way he was. And since then, with the help of an occupational therapist, we've corrected these behaviors. My son is happier than ever. He still has SI, but he knows how to avoid certain situations and he's learning how to adapt to school, parks, the world in general.

Carol Stock Kranowitz explains and gives examples of why some kids act out in class, are aggressive, shy, etc. Anyone who is around special needs children will benefit from the knowledge on these pages. It's changed my entire world.

Like with anything new, learning the ins and outs of sensory integration takes time. It's not a super easy read and until you're familiar with the terms (tactile, vestibular, proprioception, gravitational insecurity, etc) it takes some getting used to. Don't be turned off by this last sentence, anyone can learn it and understand and then apply the techniques.

Id even recommend this for parents of typical children as everyone can benefit.

This was the first of three books that I read for SPD, and this one came recommended by an OT. It's relatively informative, lots of definitions. A fair amount of time is spent with kids that are under-responsive, and I think we have a sensory craver on our hands. I could have stood to hear a lot more about that. I felt the chapter on how to help a child in the classroom was better than the chapter on what to do at home. In the end, I'm thankful for having read the book, I read sections 2 and 3 times, made notes, took the tests, but still felt a bit unclear about which things were my child and which weren't. So I don't know. I kept wondering if I needed to be smarter or if the book wasn't geared towards the parent as much as other professionals or what. But that said, I did learn a lot and have been able to repeat what I learned to others. I just can't quite figure out what I would say about my own child. There are so many terms!

This book came recommended by their therapist, and it has given me a lot of insight into what the world must seem like for both of them as well as providing our family with helpful coping strategies.

It is an eye opening look into the way we interpret our surroundings, and has given me information, tools, and hope for my daughter, who suffers severe developmental delays from this disorder. This book was recommended to me by an Early Childhood Development person that visits my son to work on speech and behavior issues we've been having. In the first few pages, I started reading it aloud to my husband and teenage daughters, saying, "I could have written this about (my son!)" Each section of each chapter gave me a clearer understanding of challenges my son has been having and a sense of understanding that others are going through the same things, I'm not crazy for thinking something is not quite right, and hope that things can be better for my son and my family. Some sections were a little confusing trying to figure out where my son's specific issues fit into the book's descriptions, whereas most sections were spot on and described specific traits or habits that pertained to us, why they were happening, and how to help change the behavior/reaction.
I learned that some things which I thought were so strange because he seemed to love and hate the same type of thing were actually different enough that they would cause different reactions. If that sounds confusing, an example is that he can work with messy art projects for hours and want to paint himself as well as the paper, but if he gets ketchup on his hand at dinner he has a meltdown. The book explained different reactions for specific reasons and helped me understand what the difference in these two events was.
I'm so glad I was pointed towards this book, and will be using the "sensory diet" suggestions in the last few chapters to help my son feel more comfortable in his world.
