Purchase options and add-ons

Now you don’t have to leave your home to learn how to mix and serve the sensational cocktails created by Jim Meehan, the nationally renowned mixologist at PDT, one of New York City’s hottest bars.

Beautifully illustrated, beautifully designed, and beautifully crafted—just like its namesake—this is the ultimate bar book by NYC's most meticulous bartender. To say that PDT is a unique bar is an understatement. It recalls the era of hidden Prohibition speakeasies: to gain access, you walk into a raucous hot dog stand, step into a phone booth, and get permission to enter the serene cocktail lounge. Now, Jim Meehan, PDT's innovative operator and mixmaster, is revolutionizing bar books, too, offering all 304 cocktail recipes available at PDT plus behind-the-scenes secrets. From his bar design, tools, and equipment to his techniques, food, and spirits, it's all here, stunningly illustrated by Chris Gall.

We spent several weeks making cocktails from this book for our cookbook blog.
5 out of 5 stars
We spent several weeks making cocktails from this book for our cookbook blog.
While a majority of the books we feature are recent new releases, we grabbed one from the archives this time around. Released in 2011, this cocktail companion quickly became a fun project for our weekend imbibing - allowing us an opportunity to flex our amateur mixology skills. This book has also sat, neglected, in our personal collection for several years. We quickly remembered why we had purchased it originally - it's good! Not only are the cocktail recipes skillfully assembled, the book is filled with fun illustrations throughout, courtesy of artist Chris Gall. Named after Please Don't Tell, the New York City speakeasy tucked behind a phone booth inside East Village hot dog joint Crif Dogs, the book boasts over 300 recipes - a mix of classic and original adult beverages. There's also some surprising food entries too - in the form of several Celebrity Chef-inspired hot dog creations (which we obviously had to try also). There's also an introductory section containing a wealth of useful information regarding setting up a home bar, glassware, tools & equipment, and essential mixers & garnishes. Lastly, an exhaustive resource list provides additional reading should you want to dive deep into all things cocktail-related. Here are the drinks we chose:• Bee's Knees - It doesn't get much simpler than this cocktail. Gin is mixed with honey syrup and lemon juice to produce a clean, refreshing sipper that would be particularly welcome on a warm Summer day. Invented in the 1930's by Frank Meier at the Ritz in Paris, the drink gets its name from an antiquated term of endearment (ie: "This cocktail is the bee's knees!")• Mint Apple Crisp - A cleverly re-named saketini, this cocktail contains just five ingredients (six, if you count the honeydew garnish). Vodka and sake make up the spirit components, while simple syrup, Granny Smith apple and mint bring the flavor. After muddling and straining, we were treated to a delicious, refreshing taste that was also quite attractive.• Vesper - A classic for a reason. And, the inspiration for a generation of drinkers who believe in "shaken, not stirred". Created in 1953 for James Bond's love interest in 'Casino Royale', this libation is dead simple to make (gin, vodka, Lillet Blanc, garnished with a lemon twist). Whether you prefer your cocktails shaken or stirred (the book instructs you to shake), you'll instantly feel like a mysterious, cosmopolitan globetrotter clandestinely plotting to take down evil villains while still allowing time for romantic trists with alluring characters - without having to leave your couch!• Little Bit Country - This cocktail was our introduction to Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur, a concoction created by the distillation of Marasca cherries dating back to the 18th century. Strangely, it doesn't taste much like actual cherries. At 32% alcohol, this is deceptively strong, with a bold, herbal flavor. Bourbon is the featured spirit here. It gets mixed with lemon juice, maple syrup, a slice of jalapeño (including a few seeds!), and finished off with a dash of both Angostura and orange bitters. As you would expect, there's a subtle heat to the taste, tempered by the sweetness of maple syrup. This is definitely a drink more welcome during cold weather months. Who are we kidding? We'd gladly imbibe any time of year!• Cherry Pop - An homage to our home state of Minnesota, where everyone says "pop" instead of "soda". In this drink, cherries are muddled with simple syrup and shaken with gin, lemon juice and our previously mentioned Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur. If you want to get fancy, the recipe calls for pebble ice. Or, you can simply take a hammer to some ice cubes from your freezer and call it a day (as we did). The flavor was sweet, yet citrus-forward, with a gorgeous pink hue.• The Chang Dog - We were already of couple of cocktail recipes into this book before we realized there was an entire section of hot dog recipes - developed by some true legends in the culinary scene (Wylie Dufresne, Daniel Humm and this offering from David Chang). Apparently, these were served at the bar via two small metal doors connected to Crif Dogs next door. Make no mistake, these are not your typical drunken variety you'd stumble upon at a street cart on your way home. These elevated interpretations contain several components, some requiring advance planning and preparation - as was the case for the homemade kimchi that sits atop the Chang Dog. Realizing we'd likely never again have an opportunity to make a fancy hot dog from a book of cocktail recipes, we dove in. We allowed our kimchi to ferment for the recommended amount of time (two weeks). This particular version is a bit assertive in the fish sauce flavor profile. We'll likely dial it back slightly when making future batches. Although the recipe calls for frying the bacon-wrapped hot dogs, we opted for our air fryer and the results were fantastic. The hot dogs we procured from our neighborhood deli had a pleasant "snap" to them, which complimented the slight crunch from the kimchi. All in all, a fun, unexpected find in a cocktail book and one we really enjoyed and would gladly eat again - especially after a few drinks.

I'm not sure I could set up a commercial bar from just the instructions in this book--and they're pretty complete, just leave a lot of the seat of the pants requirements to another day. Where this book excels is in its drink recipes, commentaries, ingredient lists, and sense of history blending into today's cocktail mania. The graphics are top-end, layout is great, and the entire book is a pleasure to use. It's almost like a coffee-table book in its aesthetic, but it's a practical how-to-do-it book that should be around anyone who's serious about interesting things to do with booze.

Being a New Mexican, I've headed off the PDT map a bit with my "Manhattan Project", but couldn't resist the invitation from the PDT bar folks to try about five rye whiskies before I got the right one, and now I have more types of bitters (another book worth checking out) than I have friends who'll drink with me. The modern age doesn't favor hanging out in cocktail arenas if there's not reliable public transport. If you can find the ingredients--and some are pretty rare--this book will have you mixing things up in your own basement speakeasy in a trice. Well worth the investment, and a book that'll be a mainstay on my bar shelf.

This book is fabulously well organized and has a clear presentation. The recipes aren't crowded and it is very easy to look at what is needed. I particularly liked that each recipe mentions who originally proposed the recipe, you can think of this book as a curated collection of the best cocktails of the past 100 years. With this book you won't need most of the classic books.

I also liked that each recipe recommends a particular liquor brand that can actually be found at your local store unlike other books that call for some exotic brands that I have never seen or that are outrageously expensive. If you don't have a particular brand, you shouldn't feel bad of course you can still make the cocktail. I personally like having a "brand" in mind but don't feel restricted by it.

The recipes are also easy to make and are of the stir/shake variety, just as in a regular bar. If you want a book about fancy smoke-infused or charred chile type of recipes then this isn't it. Most of the recipes still fall in the "classic" category.

I'm a PDT fan. I've spent the last 3 New Years Eves tucked safely behind the phone booth in the hot dog stand. It's one of my "Happy Places" in New York. Where else can you sit quietly, enjoying an exquisite cocktail with friends while feasting on a David Chang or Wylie Dufresne-inspired hot dog?

Well, thanks to this book, you can bring that experience home.

I use the PDT cocktail book a couple times a week to find something new, either as a night cap for myself or to entertain friends. I love the write-ups and the recipes, and the artwork is truly amazing.

Throw away your Mr. Boston's guide, grab that bottle that's been hiding at the back of your liquor cabinet because you didn't know what to do with it, and call a few of your best friends.

The only thing missing from the full PDT experience is the taxidermy. But this is Amazon. I'm sure they can help.

Pros:
A great book with fantastic illustrations and a wealth of recipes!
Hard cover and looks great on the shelf or on the bar top.
Also includes a ton of tips to set up a bar (some of these seem directed more to a commercial bar or larger home bar)
The drink recipes are inspired and work fantastically.
Gives recipes to tons of mixers as well, make your own ginger beer and such for truly custom and delcious cocktails

Cons:
Some aspects of finishing aren't mentioned in the ingredient list (a splash of champagne here, a top with tonic there)
Recipes mention specific liquors and cordials, however one can substitute with an equivalent.

I would recommend this to a friend!

Absolutely essential. An invaluable modern classic. The writing is engaging, practical and accessible to both professionals and home enthusiasts alike. The artwork is excellent. And the recipes have all been incredibly tasty and approachable thus far. I've borrowed friend's copies of the book and the past and admired it in stores for years, I'm so glad I finally just sucked it up and purchased my own. It's a great investment and addition to any cocktail nerd's bookshelf.

Highly, highly recommended.

The book is well organized with a diverse array of good cocktails. It is a fine, competent reference. However, there is something missing when compared to the recipes in Death & Co.'s work. Frequently, in looking at the called-for base spirit, vermouth or liqueur in the PDT recipes, I see a rather bland/generic that I have found wanting in the past.

NOTE: My new copy repeats at least two sections, pages 225-232 and then 233-240 are each printed twice and interspersed. It was deja vu as I was skimming through for recipes.

Incredible value! I know it serves partially as advertisement for PDT, but under $13 for a hardcover book with thick full-color pages is incredible.

The writing and art are top-notch, and the book has interesting tidbits about the craft I haven't found in any other books. The back of the book has a spirits primer section that lists each spirit used in the recipes in its appropriate section. This tacitly functions as an endorsement list of quality brands.

The only downside is that the recipes usually specify brands of each spirit, so it may not be the best resource if you are a beginner who wants a simple cocktail book.

However, if you are interested in the craft, or are ready to start refining your cocktails, this is a great book. It would also make a beautiful coffee table book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The PDT" achieves a relevant and unique place in a long line of cocktail books..
Reviewed in Canada on April 18, 2016
Jim Meehan has become a guru in the mixology world, and his name is synonymous with contemporary cocktail culture and quality mix drinks. The PDT Cocktail Book consists of both obscure and well-known drinks, for a total of over 300 different recipes. There is also some historical information included on each cocktail which makes for a great all-around book.

There is a forward written by David Wondrich, as well as artwork from illustrator Chris Gall, which help make the book both unique and enjoyable. Many of the recipes were served at the bar he co-ran in NewYork called PDT, which was accessed through an old telephone booth. He has since moved on to Portland Oregon, and is apparently working on his next writing project.

Most of the recipes in the book don’t require ingredients that are difficult to source, and can be prepared from home without the use of expensive and space-consuming equipment. The author does specify certain types of liquor, but that helps to clarify the type of flavours he’s aiming for. If the original is not available, you can research the ones specified, and usually find a good substitute with a similar flavour profile.

I’d recommend “The PDT Cocktail Book” because the recipes are practical, and ones I most often reach for. “The PDT” achieves a relevant and unique place in a long line of cocktail books dating back from pre-prohibition through to our modern-day.
