I found this book very informative, enlightening, and analytical. A must read for anyone interested in the post-Soviet err, conflict resolution, ethnic war, and the structural causes of such events. Christoph Zurcher delivers with well thought out arguments, examples and guided discussion.

very political science-y: 1) state the facts 2) provide analysis 3) plug into the overall framework developed by author. Its an ok book but to be completely honest 70% of the book's historical information (for which I bought it) could be found on wikipedia...its a nice dissertation I'm sure but overall I'd recommend it only to those who are completely unaware of about the region.

Great book, a bit thick on theory at times (I'm not a poli-sci person, I'm a Russianist), but very comprehensive. The theory helps to dispel some of the common misconceptions about internal wars, so I was glad it was there. Top notch!

I liked his analytical approach to the conflicts in the Caucasus. It is most definitely worth reading.
