A Perspective Changer

This is an amazing book. Rather than being a biography of the men or their politics, it explores what leadership factors made them successful or not. Intellect and good decisions are not enough for a president, they have to be able to get the job done. This book explores the intangibles in a very readable and engaging manner. I find myself looking at the current array of candidates with these concepts in mind - I think Dr. Seigel would have a lot to say about Trump's rise in the polls and some keen observations about the others. A great read that can easily be applied to the current race. I look at the stump speeches and debates quite differently having read it!

This book’s title, which was probably chose by the publisher, should be “Presidents and the Presidency.” The author uses a four-part template of presidential leadership to trace the careers and presidencies of each commander-in-chief from Ronald Regan through George W. Bush. He prefaces this with an insightful analysis of the presidency itself. The result is a concise, readable refrain on presidential power and achievement. It is a must for political junkies and scholars who want a non-partisan look at how presidents have used their position to advance policies or have fallen short in the process. In this era of partisanship, it is refreshing to find such an even-handed look at the office and its occupants.

An Approachable, Practical, and Intelligent Book

Michael E. Siegel's "The President as Leader" is an excellent analysis of Presidential strategy towards policy-making and policy implementation through the personal leadership and the Cabinet of the last five U.S. Presidents from Jimmy Carter to George W. Bush. Siegel's writing style is fluid and focused, with a clever sense of narrative that will appeal to political junkies, academics, and the general reader with little formal knowledge of politics. He is a gifted writer who in "The President as Leader" demonstrates thoroughly and clearly to a wide audience the complexities of Presidential decision-making and the tremendous impact that a President's Cabinet can have upon that process.

In this outstanding assessment of the U.S. President as "manager," Siegel successfully avoids the partisan bombast that is typical of many pundit writers as well as the extraordinarily narrow, densely written, and seemingly inapplicable prose of most academic works on the Presidency. "The President as Leader" is an approachable, practical, and intelligent book that convincingly establishes a rubric measuring how "Presidential" a President is. Siegel strongly demonstrates to the reader that a President must not only have an inspiring message and the will to lead the American people, the President must also be able to convince and inspire their own Cabinet to efficiently and effectively carry out their desired policies.

This book is a terrific entry point into Presidential politics for the reader new to U.S. politics or the machinations of the U.S. Presidency, and a model contribution to established expert works on the topic of the U.S. Presidency. "The President as Leader" is a must-read as the 2012 Presidential election looms closer and closer and the American public is asked to decide whether to re-elect President Obama or turn instead to his challenger Mitt Romney.

A refreshing and practical analysis of leadership

Michael Siegel's book on leadership is the most practical and enjoyable book on the subject I have ever read. Leadership can be an esoteric concept, but Dr. Siegel unravels its ambiguities by brilliantly defining it in four parts: Policy (Vision); Politics (Strategy, Political Savvy); Structure (Management) and Process (Decision Making).

These terms are vividly illustrated by the strengths and weaknesses of Carter, Bush I, Reagan, Clinton, Bush II and Clinton. Mr. Siegel manages to keep his eye on their distinctive leadership styles, while keeping clear of politics. He uses the presidents and his research to drive home his point that leadership stands equally on the legs of vision, political mastery, management ingenuity and decision-making. The story is never dull, particularly through the lens that Dr. Siegel provides.

You don't have to aspire to presidential leadership to gain much from reading this book. I would recommend Dr. Siegel's book to anyone interested in improving his/her leadership skills.

Interesting, Non-partial, well-written book about leadership and the Presidency

I hate text books, however I love politics, history and negotiation. This book was an excellent read for all three of those things and the best part is, it's not written like a text book! Not only did it give a non-partial perspective on the leadership styles since Carter, but I also learned a lot about each President, their similarities, their differences and the differences in the challenges they faced. It is also a great tool to use in any case of leadership and can really help in one's everyday life. Most of all I would say the author is very informed and does a great job at sharing his knowledge without bias. This is really a fantastic read and I would recommend it to anyone.

A phenomenal work

This book is just as informative as it is easy to read. That says a lot, considering that there a vast amount of information that the author synthesizes to give us a thorough look into the leadership qualities the US President needs. What I liked even more was the book's non-partisan tone: it highlighted both the significant and unfortunate events related to the leadership qualities discussed for all presidents, regardless of their political affiliation. I learned much about the Presidents discussed not only as leaders, but how and why their actions and body of colleagues and mentors ultimately shaped their respective presidencies. A great read and I will refer to if for future studies on the presidency and/or leadership.
