The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist Paperback – April 1, 2010
Purchase options and add-ons
We follow Father Gary's year-long training with a senior exorcist as he is transformed from a doubter into a believer. Baglio gained unprecedented access to this world, including participating in exorcisms and culminating with Father Gary's own fearsome confrontation with the Devil. Woven into his story is the fascinating history of exorcism, its rites and rituals, and the ways and reasons that people become possessed. Matt Baglio speaks to psychologists and detectives, as well as Vatican clergy, to wrinkle out the truth about this most Gothic of subjects. The Riteis proof that the truth about demonic possession is not only stranger than fiction, but far more chilling.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2014The subject (a priest being trained to deal with exorcism) is of interest to me. The priest is a real person; it is his personal experiences we read about. His efforts in confronting evil while tring not to allow it to take him over are both moving (his humanity; his faith) and terrifying (evil IS real and has invaded the bodies and minds of the poor souls the priest and his mentor are working to help. The book is well-written and the subject matter is thought-provoking.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2012Riviting portrayal of actual events. Follows a priest through his internship with an Italian exorcist and give an accurate report of his experiences as seen through the eyes of faith.
This is a documentary of a journey through the
formation of faith and will challenge many assumptions people may have regarding the battle of good and evil and the role of the Catholic faith. I read this in one night and was hungry for more. I have such respect for the Priests called to this ministry and a much more firm understanding of the work they do after reading this. You will not regret getting and reading this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2019The book struck and good balance between detailing the Catholic Church’s exorcism ministry and staying objective. It’s nice when authors do this well enough that they don’t need to constantly write about doing so throughout the book.

Mr WadsleyReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Very good read although not at bedtimes
Great book it’s very detailed which is what I wanted and once I opened it I couldn’t put it down it learns you a lot about the subject of exorcism and how it’s practice in Rome and how it is teached to the brave few that dare to take part in it very good read for start to finish I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in the subject
Kindle CustomerReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 18, 20204.0 out of 5 stars Good for a quick read.
This book trots along nicely and does not get too bogged down in nuances. It goes deep enough into the theology for a casual reader whilst keeping it interesting.
I liked the way the ritual was explained and the author did not try to mystify the subject, but rather stated it quite matter of factly.
Wyn R LloydReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 26, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Balanced, thoughtful, interesting
The book flows well with a great background story that leads you on. Excellent insured into the life of the exorcism and the possessed with links to material should you want to learn more. I found myself fascinated, nervous, joyous and intrigued many times throughout the book, but was left with a sense of wonder and hope.
MartinReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the movie
The movie, even if from my personal point of view was fantastic, was just aimed to "have fun" and could mislead you to some wrong ideas or concepts. The book is a serious research about the demonic possession an exorcism with an extensive bibliography supporting it. I was expecting a novel and I read a very well conducted and written journalist work... I was pleasingly surprised!!
