A deliciously gothic story of wishes and curses – a new dark fairy tale set against a Victorian backdrop full of lace and smoke.
‘Deliciously dark’
Woman Magazine
Once upon a time Ella had wished for more than her life as a lowly maid.
Now forced to work hard under the unforgiving, lecherous gaze of the man she once called stepfather, Ella’s only refuge is in the books she reads by candlelight, secreted away in the library she isn’t permitted to enter.
One night, among her beloved books of far-off lands, Ella’s wishes are answered. At the stroke of midnight, a fairy godmother makes her an offer that will change her life: seven wishes, hers to make as she pleases. But each wish comes at a price and Ella must decide whether it’s one she’s willing to pay…
A smouldering, terrifying new spin on Cinderella – perfect for fans of Laura Purcell and Erin Morgenstern.

About the Author
JJA Harwood is an author, editor and blogger. She grew up in Norfolk, read History at the University of Warwick and eventually found her way to London, which is still something of a shock for somebody used to so many fields.
When not writing, she can be found learning languages, cooking with more enthusiasm than skill, wandering off into clearly haunted houses and making friends with stray cats. THE SHADOW IN THE GLASS was her debut novel.

Seventeen year old Eleanor Rose Hartley is a maid in Grandbough House.
While in the library, Ella finds a book, and summons a mysterious woman who grants Ella seven wishes for a price.
In the plot, Hardwood mentions the play: Faust
Then spins a tale with twists and turns. I felt sorry for Eleanor because she
is trapped by the constraints of society and class (She is really naïve as a
17 year old, but I think people that did care about her has tried to shield
her from the harshness of life; I wonder if they themselves had struck a
deal too with the woman featured in this novel). She has good intentions
at first, but I wonder if she is just worn down/believes that she deserves
what she gets until she has enough. As I read more, I knew how this would
end. It is a dark fairytale. Not Sunshine or Rainbows. Worth a read.
There's not much I can say about it that doesn't spoil things, because the mood is unexpected, and I think the pacing of unexpected directions is a big part of what's good about the book, so sort of SPOILERS:

I suppose it's kind of like Bojack Horseman, with a slow build that starts veering left. This book similarly plays with your empathy and leaves you wondering what to think of most of the characters. I wasn't expecting that going in; this book is one of those that's hard to fit squarely in a typical genre slot, so I think many of the bad reviews are by people who were looking for a light romance or a fantasy story or something. But more explanation in advance would impact the flow of the reader's reactions, a lot like how the goofy cartoonishness of the first few episodes of Bojack make the descent that much more surprising.
I really enjoyed it the characters were believable, so was the time in which the story was written.
Fantastic Debut Novel.

Well written, but the story was lacking. Main character was unlikeable. Left a lot of answered questions.
