Things don’t go quite as planned, her intended victims aren’t as innocent as they first seemed and soon Jane is feeling some serious heat from both the law and her marks.
The Shill is a captivating story! Jane reminds me of a cat, it’s like she has nine lives, she tossed from one situation to another, dodging hitmen and a crazed ex-mark. Jane endures, battered and bruised but still standing. She's is not the most sympathetic character ever written, after all, it doesn’t take much for Jane to be led into a life of crime, but it’s not like she doesn’t pay for her transgressions in painful ways. Still, I didn’t feel a close connection to the character that I personally like to feel in the stories I listen to.
Kera O’Bryon is entertaining as she narrates this 8-hour audiobook and she does a good job with most of the characters and dialects required in this reading. The pacing and energy level of her delivery was perfect and the production quality was clear and distortion free.
I wavered between a 3 ½ star and a 4-star rating and decided on 4-stars based on the quality of the writing and narrating and not my preference for a more engaging main character.
This audiobook was gifted to me exchange for an unbiased review!
Sometimes in books like this, I will review each book on its own and then give an overall feeling -- I'm just going to give my overall opinion on the book. If you want to see story by story, you can check each of those out on Amazon and Audible.
This kind of story isn't always my go to, but I found myself getting really into the story as it progressed. A lot of times these feel either too far fetched or too real. When an author can make it feel real, authentic, and almost a little gritty -- that's the perfect equilibrium. These books seem to hit that perfect spot for me.
Each one of these stories would be easily digested in one sitting, and the way that Shepphird wrote them made them feel like they were going even faster.
The character development and actual characters in The Shill Trilogy were just so enthralling and interesting that I kept trying to put the book down, but I couldn't.
The narration for this was done by Kera O'Bryon, who does a really nice job. And allows for a seamless integration into the main character's point of view. She definitely kept me interested throughout and added to the drama, thrilling, and fast-paced action that was going on inside these books.
Overall, The Shill Trilogy is one of those books that hit high notes and low notes for me, but overall I enjoyed it. Any book that can keep my interest and make me stay doing whatever I'm doing is a winner. (I'm usually driving to work while listening to audiobooks). If you enjoy gritty but well thought out crime/con-man fiction, then this trilogy is definitely for you.
I regularly listen to audiobooks on my commute and this one had me circling my destination to listen to the end of chapters. I was so hooked. Kera O'Bryon does an incredible job narrating the story of a struggling actress tangled in capers and crime who, over the 3 books, transforms from a naive, sacrificial "pawn" to a cunning, forceful "rook".
