PROS:
-spiral bound, lays flat
-pages are laminated, no need to worry about spills and splashes ruining it
-recipes aren't overly complicated or needlessly outside a kid's taste bud comfort zone
-ingredients called for aren't difficult to find, many you'll have on hand. But there's enough per each recipe so that your little chef will feel like s/he's really creating something
-recipe names are cute and draws on the Star Wars universe (Hoth Chocolate anyone?)
-recipes are varied. There are desserts, snacks, drinks, sides, sandwiches, etc
CONS

Your little one will be whipping up items in the kitchen faster than the Millenium Falcon can make the Kessel Run!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2018Easy recipes. I don't cook but these are simple and can be done with kids. I enjoy the recipes and bought a second copy for my sister and her kids (and they have made several of the recipes). The chili is basic but good and filling, as is the Hoth chocolate, Skywalker smoothies, Stormtrooper sandies, Hans burgers, Dark Side salsa. The diversity in recipes is also noted - breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages, snacks. Simple, easy, fun, delicious recipes for even the most basic of cooks and I enjoy it greatly. The photos are also well done and worth the smile. Definitely glad I purchased. Shipped quickly and protectively.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2016We have checked this book out of the library a dozen times, so I bought it. We have made the Skywalker Smoothie and Yoda soda. I learned to make my own lime sherbet to avoid the food coloring. The kids love making the simple recipes as well. The photos are entertaining. The recipes are surprisingly good. Many kid cookbooks fall very short of anything delicious. But this one is different.
I also liked the hardback and spiral bound. This makes it easier to read while making the recipe.
I was surprised by the pages - they are laminated!!! The one in the library is terrible and not laminated. The laminate pages keep food and drink off of your book so it stays nice while being in the kitchen. Great execution on the format.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2023Many years have I wanted this cookbook. I remember reading about The Star Wars Cook Book: Wookiee Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes when it first came out in the late 90s and I knew I had to have it. How could I not want such a thing? Filled with creative puns such as cinnamon rolls in the shape of Princess Leia's iconic hair, a neon green lime soda fit for that little muppet on Dagobah, and best of all, an official recipe for the cookies Chewbacca's wife, Malla, made in that infamous Life Day special, it was certainly a dream come true for this Star Wars fan. It went on every Christmas wish list for the next decade, but alas, I never did find a copy underneath the tree. I suppose, to some extent, it would seem like a cheap gimmic that any lazy author could get away with: find some generic recipes to collect up into a small book and slap the Star Wars IP on top of it. But is it really just that simple? I finally decided it was time to buy this book over two decades later and find out. Did it live up to what I imagined it would be for all these years, or is it just as hokey as one might assume?
Initially, I was inclined to agree with the critics. There are only 60 pages in this cookbook, making it a touch on the small side, especially considering nearly half of them are dedicated to the very creative images. I would have hoped for a lot more than the 29 recipes it provides, and it certainly does not leave any room for pages on skills and techniques to learn, such as the very important “mise en place”. The recipes themselves are also quite basic and unremarkable; at best, most read as though they came off the back of a soup can or a bag of chocolate chips. Some even omit information that could be quite useful, such as informing the readers to use a mild cheddar as opposed to an aged, sharp cheddar for the “Galaxy Grilled Cheese”, as harder, older cheeses tend to be more difficult to melt. With this cookbook, impress a chef, you will not. But where this cookbook seemingly fails, it actually excels.
The part that critics often overlook is the introduction as found on page 4. This cookbook may not rival “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”, but it is not meant to; rather, this was written for children. With this context in mind, it is easy to see why the book was written the way it was. While several recipes could have taken some time to explain the importance of preheating your oven or why cutting things evenly is crucial to ensure your ingredients cook evenly, what child wants to learn about that stuff? This isn’t culinary school, but this is a fun and creative means of simply getting your Star Wars-loving kids in the kitchen. True, the recipes are on the simpler side, but this makes them approachable for the target audience, and it does provide clear and concise instructions that a child should be able to understand. It also provides great safety info in the introductory section, such as how to properly lift a pot lid so that the steam rises away from you and others, or to individually clean your knives without putting them in a sink full of water – a safety tip I wish more adult cooks would learn! And though it may be a small package, I really appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the book itself. The spiral binding makes it so much easier to use in the kitchen, allowing it to lay perfectly flat without the pages turning on you. The pages themselves are laminated and should hold up to abuse. And I cannot overstate how great the images are, showcasing most of the recipes found in the book in a very playful way using the old “Power of the Force” line of Star Wars toys from 1995 to creatively entice the readers to try the recipes for themselves. Oh, and I cannot forget the bonus stickers in the back, which are a real treat. This cookbook is more than just a gimmick, as some might describe; it is clear to me that thought and care went into its creation.
In conclusion, will you gain much from this cookbook? Well, it simply depends. Do you already know your way around the kitchen? Do you know how to use the Internet to find recipes? Are you barely a Star Wars fan? If you answered yes to any of those questions, I’d say skip this purchase. However, if you’re buying this for someone who is either in need of beginner-friendly recipes and/or a huge Star Wars fan looking for an excuse to make the famous “Wookiee Cookies” on November 17th, it’ll prove to provide what you’re looking for. Though there are better recipes on the Internet for free than what you can find in this book, I am enjoying my time cooking my way through this book page by page and satisfying an itch I've had for decades. I would say this cookbook can offer that joy for you, too, as long as you buy this with reasonable expectations. Regardless if you are a kitchen wizard or culinary padawan, may the Force be with you, always!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2020This book is quite fun. It has great pictures and fun names for the different recipes. You know you need 'Wookie Cookies' in your life! I bought it to encourage kids to cook and they were instantly fascinated. The directions are clear, the pages are coated to resist splatters etc. It is nice that it has coil binding so it lays flat and you don't lose your place. This is important for younger cooks. I recommend this book for any Star Wars fans.
