The Tombs: A Fargo Adventure, Book 4 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 4,954 ratings

Husband-and-wife team Sam and Remi Fargo are intrigued when an archaeologist friend requests their help excavating a top secret historical site. What they find will set them on a hunt for a prize greater than they could ever imagine. The clues point to the hidden tomb of Attila the Hun, the High King who was reportedly buried with a vast fortune of gold and jewels and plunder....a bounty that has never been found. As they follow the trail through Hungary, Italy, France, Russia, and Kazakhstan - a trail that they discover leads them not to one tomb, but five - the Fargos will find themselves pitted against a thieving group of amateur treasure hunters, a cunning Russian businessman, and a ruthless Hungarian who claims direct descent from Attila himself...and will stop at nothing to claim the tombs' riches as his own.

I have read most of the "The Cargos" novels and I can honestly say that there were more twists and turns in this one novel. Every time Clive Cussler puts out a new series of books, they get more and more action, adventure and thrills. This was a great Fargo novel. They get better as the series grows. "A REAL PAGE TURNER. once you start any one of Clive Cussler's series of action, adventure and thriller novels has it's special characterizing of the people in each series. The Fargo's novels never fail to give you more action, interesting plots, travel locations and ways of escaping impossible situations. I'm ready for newest novel to come out. Never a dull moment.

I have read all of the Fargo Adventure Novels (all Cussler, with the exception of the Isaac Bell books). I read the first Fargo Adventure in hard-cover, when it first released, and was glad that Cussler was branching out with new co-writers and new ideas. The first book was good, but as I continued with the series, as they were released, I found that they were pretty predictable, and all followed the same model for the story. With early Fargo Adventures, the heroes of the story, Sam and Remie, have a knack for being the greatest at whatever they do (almost ridiculously so), that I was beginning to become seriously turned off by it. I had taken a break from this series until "The Mayan Secrets" released for this reason. "The Tombs" changes the model up just enough to make it a somewhat refreshing story, and brings Cussler back to newer work and my continued reading. It did remind me a little too much of "Inca Gold", from the late eighties/early nineties (especially the diving sequences!). I will definitely continue to read the Fargo Adventures, as I am opportunistic that they will continue towards the newer material. If you enjoyed Dirk and Al's mid-career exploits, you will enjoy this jaunt through middle America.

In this newest installment in the Fargo series, Sam and Remi face perhaps their most dangerous adventure yet. While diving off the coast of Louisiana, Sam and Remi are contacted by their friend Albrecht Fischer, a professor of classical archaeology at Heidelberg University. Albrecht believes he may have found clues to the treasure of Attila the Hun. Needless to say, Sam and Remi waste no time rushing to join their friend.

Attila was said to have loaded his tombs with untold sums of gold, jewels, and artifacts. Attila himself was buried in a solid gold casket which in turn was put inside a larger silver casket. However, Albrecht, Sam, and Remi are not the only ones in the search. Arpad Bako, a Hungarian who is in the business of illegal drugs, is also on the hunt for Attila's treasures. Soon, a world-wide race is underway that will take the Fargos to Italy, Hungary, France, Russia, and Kazakhstan. All the while, they must stay one step ahead of Bako and his group of henchmen.

I'm a big fan of Clive Cussler, and I especially enjoy reading the Fargo stories. Sam and Remi are fun characters and they always seem to find a way to rile up their pursuers. "The Tombs" is full of fast-paced action and adventure that I've come to expect from Cussler. I also enjoy the historical aspect that Cussler attaches to the Fargo series. The supporting characters are well-developed, and Cussler neatly incorporates them into the story.

I highly recommend "The Tombs" and the other books in the Fargo series. The action is fast-paced and the story is fun to read.

I like Cussler and his style. He has put forth a formula for the adventure novel that is inventive and allows for new ideas and writers to enter the field as collaborators. The Fargo series is a good example since they are both good solid characters and I usually like their literate and interesting adventures. The story line was way too contrived to the point that it distracted from the read. This is a review of an author and his co workers that I like so I will not nit pick. This is a story worth reading so you can see if there is anything that annoys you. I think he could use a better editorial staff
