John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States serving from 1961 until his assassination in 1963 at the age of 46. Attractive and charismatic, he was one of the most popular and youngest presidents in American history. In this engaging documentary, with insight and erudition, we trace JFK's early political career, candidacy, presidency, and examine his enduring popularity.
Seen lots of documentaries about the assassination, so there is not much more unique to say about the event. This one has a very monotone narrator and the content is mostly the basic uncontested facts. Nothing new or even a different slant to the story. Thought since this is a British created documentary that it might offer some more unbiased view of everything. NOT!
Video consists almost entirely of period news video of JFK, his life and his presidency, with some excerpts of speeches. Much of the 24 minute video is of the JFK funeral. After a video of his inauguration, the narrator claims that JFK used 'the techniques of Stalin' to gain the Oval Office, meaning apparently, creation of a good political image, not the murder of tens of millions of his fellow citizens. The video mentions the Bay of Pigs fiasco, Bobby's pursuit of mob figureheads, and does mention the possibility that the CIA/LBJ were involved in the assassination, without giving one fact or detail that would lead one to believe that as a real possibility. For that see LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination Inclusion of the Oswald on camera statement after his arrest that he was a 'patsy' should have been in this presentation. It was the only opportunity the alleged assassin ever had to publicly deny his involvement.
Very poorly made video with little entertainment value, hard to believe someone could actually set through and watch all 25 minutes. I have no idea why it is called “The Unauthorized Story” unless the producers were hoping such a name would increase revenue. I think a better name would be “The Kennedy Presidency in 25 Minutes (with a slight emphasis on JFK’s Assassination) if this video deserves much of a name in the first place.
That said, the aspects which make this so difficult to watch is that grating background music coupled with the narrater’s hard to understand accent and the almost hypnotic and unemotional tone of her voice. Technically, I would say this video is non controversial and for the most part accurate and does mention the usual villains most associated with the assassination conspiracies (KGB, CIA, the Federal Government, LBJ and organized crime). But unless you have been in a coma for the past 55 years, most if not all the information and video clips have been shown over and over.
Some of the other reviewers refer to the "the techniques of Stalin” which occurs at the 16:08 mark. I think she was saying "Having used the techniques of stardom (not Stalin) to get to the Presidency” which she describes as Kennedy’s pose in front of the camera, his Harvard accent and his good looks, even though her accent does sound like she is saying “Stalin”.
Overall a poorly made video which I would not recommend watching.
I have always been haunted by the death of President Kennedy. If only he decided to not go to Dallas and stay in Washington, DC to celebrate John John's birthday. This country would have so much better.
