A history-as-description without much "meat"
on April 15, 2013
While readable, the book seems just like a list of all the food-culture events, factoids, and personalities, without very little analysis or tying things into culture or society. Shallow, in other words; what you could collect from newspaper articles and so on, without thoughtful analysis of what it all really means. I found no insights, though I do now know more about James Beard's personal life than I really wanted to know. While the bulk of the book is just names and dates and stories thereof, such analysis and opinions about culture are a bit dated; there's some of that optimistic pre-2008 buzz going on.
