4.0 out of 5 starsWe're Gathering a Community. The Righteous, The Wicked The Wanderers. Those who are Lost and Those Who Are Found!
Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2016
If you have enjoyed reading the Michael Wallace series, "The Righteous," you will definitely enjoy reading the third book in the series, "Wicked." Dr. Jacob Christensen was born and raised in the polygamist cult known as the Righteous in Southwestern America. In the fictional community of Blister Creek, he lives there with his wife, Fern, and others. Torn between his devotion to his religion and his dislike of polygamy, Jacob is a complicated figure of a man who becomes an unwilling leader to the Righteous.

In the third book of the series, Eliza, Jacob's feisty independent sister, takes on another cult looking for a missing girl. Eliza is unlike most female characters in the community. She has bolted from the polygamy and sought education. She seeks the missing woman with resilience and typical feistiness. I couldn't get Miriam who joins into the community.

I was surprised to see how much that I enjoyed reading about the Righteous series even with my disagreement about polygamy. I found Michael Wallace's series to be refreshing and well-developed. The characters like Jacob, Miriam, Eliza and Fern are very well-developed into multi-dimensional characters. While I have a hard time with the rapture and the apocalyptic scenario, I enjoyed reading about the Kimbles, Christensens and Blister Creek.

If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, you will definitely want to read third and the entire series of the Righteous. I am surprised that Hollywood hasn't come knocking on Michael Wallace's door to get this series into a movie or television deal. I would definitely watch it.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot as good as the first two of the series
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2012
I was really looking forward to the third installation of Michael Wallace's Righteous Series, but I was disappointed. What I found appealing about the other two was that the mysteries were set within the context of a polygamous community, with Jacob and Eliza originating from the community, but existing somewhat outside of it (for some reason, I am both fascinated and repelled by the topic of polygamy and the self-justification of polygamous community members of both sexes). Although this book continues with the same protagonists, most of the action takes place within a non-polygamous religious cult (but the obviously schizophrenic cult leader has ties to the same polygamous world as Jacob and Eliza) and the only real connection to the previous books is that this somehow figures into Abraham Christianson's machinations and master plan, which aren't really clear, and will presumably be revealed in the fourth book. The bulk of the story takes place as Eliza infiltrates the cult and tries to rescue a young woman in its clutches. The story is pretty predictable, but portents future conflict between Jacob and Eliza and polygamous cult leader Abraham.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eliza infiltrates a Doomsday cult
Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013

In The Wicked (Righteous Series #3) by Michael Wallace we again have the Christianson's pitted against the Kimball's. This time our main characters are Eliza who sets off to retrieve a kidnapped/brainwashed girl who has been abducted by The Disciple (Caleb Kimball)

Eliza infiltrates the Doomsday cult to find the followers are wayward youth who are being starved and sexually abused under the guise of purification, sanctification and cleansing.

Former FBI agent Sister Miriam goes to Las Vegas in an attempt to bring David Christianson back into the fold after the unconvinced and devious patriarch Abraham Christianson reluctantly agrees to lift his ban on the boy. In this book Jacob becomes a secondary character along with is wife Fernie leaving the heavy lifting to his sister, Eliza.

At the end of the book the reader realizes there may be more to the feud between the two families than meets the eye. Who can be trusted? Who can't?

The Wicked leads us into the desert compounds of polygamist sects of the Mormons and has us asking more questions than are answered. Again, this is an entertaining book on many levels and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great installment of a very unique and well done series

I'll admit it, this series has really captured my imagination. The unique characters and the author's insightful and well thought out way of handling the religious and philosophical questions that arise in his stories have resulted in novels that are engrossing and highly entertaining. I was glad to see Eliza take the forefront in this latest installment, and was amazed at how much she has grown as a character. It is important to read the first two books in this series in order to fully appreciate the circumstances which led these characters to the events in The Wicked. In this novel, the action is even more intense and the danger is even greater as we leave the world of religion behind and enter the world of the full blown cult.

This book is certainly darker and edgier than the first two installments. The author's portrayal of mental illness and his spot on pacing made for a truly creepy read that had me glued to the page. I truly hope this series keeps going, as the characters are just so well done and intriguing that I can't wait to see what happens to them next. The window is open for another installment as the reader is left wondering at intrigues still to be revealed. A recommend for any fan of suspense fiction willing to be challenged by a unique perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable series

I have now read the first 3 books in this series and I actually enjoyed them quite a lot. This story was interesting on a different level as it involved the fanaticism and cult like attitude that is sometimes associated with the mormon faith (and others of course). I liked the detail given to the rituals and the way Eliza actually saw through her own eyes how easily someone with a yearing or desire to belong could be swayed into such activities. Through this series Jacob and Eliza's battles with their faith (though different battles) have been a running theme and I appreciate that this author has that element in each one. I feel that most people can relate to the struggle regardless of their own religious beliefs or lack thereof. I am going to read the fourth book and hopefully there will be many more to come before Jacob settles his into his leadership position too permanently and before Eliza gets drawn in or pulls out of the mormon church/faith/compound.

I guess I started on these drawn in by the difference of the setting and a morbid fascination with cults. This is a good story but I found myself on the outside as regards the characters. I have lost the connection somewhere. Maybe its because I can't understand the beliefs and I find the interaction of the modern and religious worlds difficult. I read this some time ago and am only now getting around to reviewing it. At this distance I can remember my impressions of the book. Some impatience with Eliza, and generally antipathy towards Jacob. For all he seems not to believe yet he is drawn into acting his way through leadership in the sect. A strange world and hard to understand the way these people live. I bought them all and will probably finish the rest some time. But they have sat on my kindle now for several months as I have wandered off in other directions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of violence & evil in The Wicked

Definitely, a page turner, The Wicked, #3 in the Righteous series, is farfetched in some areas, but suspenseful & exciting. The violence & sex in The Wicked might be a turn off for some. Eliza Christianson infiltrates into a cult which is waiting for the world to end. The Disciple of this cult is mentally ill, cruel & just plain evil.

The Righteous series covers several fictional sects of the Mormon Church and some cults too. Certain members of the Christianson & Kimball families are main characters in each book.

Michael Wallace is an excellent storyteller. I've read the first three books in this series now and found the stories to be exciting page-turners with enough twists & turns to keep them interesting. By the way, each of these 3 books can stand on its own, but I'm glad I read them to get the full depth of the main characters, Jacob & Eliza Christianson.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series,
The Blessed and the Damned (Righteous Series #4) , which will be released in October.

Having now read all three of the Righteous series (and awaiting number four to be delivered to my Kindle when it comes out), I rate this one the best of the three. The plot thickens this time as Jacob's and Eliza's father Abraham shows a darker side and a greater allegiance to his upbringing than to his children. We meet Jacob's older brother David, a "lost boy" who's about as lost as one can get (at least alone) and with more than forty more siblings, who knows how many more brothers and sisters of Jacob's will turn up as the series continues? We also meet another wayward Kimball brother, Caleb, younger than any of the brothers from the first two. And at the end we're left to ponder not just Abraham's position, but where Taylor Junior might be and what sort of evil might be in his head, knowing full well that Wallace will let us know in future stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars I continue to read the books

Michael Wallace seems to know about polygamy. This novel's world uses both unspoken cultural conventions and spoken rules that might really exist within a polygamous society. I find his knowledge interesting. Social conventions are the backbone of many Victorian novels and they are at work within his murder mysteries too. I started with the first novel and have followed the characters through to this novel. Some characters seem stereotypes, others seem shallow however, the clash between conventional, monogamous society and polygamous groups rings true enough to me. The polygamous groups seem, well, paranoid; while the rest of the world seems content to let them exist as long as they keep to themselves. I will keep reading the novels in the order they are published in. They're interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down

This story can stand alone, but really only clearly makes sense if you have the background of the characters from reading the first two books in the series. They were so good, especially the first one, that you're hoping for a continuation of that kind of gripping writing. Because you are pulling for the success of the main character, her journey to set some things right becomes terrorizing and believable with the onset of the number of mind-numbing cults today. Michael Wallace does a good job of winding the present story into the lives and motives of characters from the previous books, but knowing the earlier parts to this tale would make it so much richer.

Maybe this can act as encouragement to read the first two in the Righteous Series.
