I was disappointed by this book as it lacks any additional info or opinion that you can't easily find on the Azure Blogs, forums or slideshares. I am struggling to think of anything that I learned from the book that wasn't already well known and publicised. Perhaps if you have no previous insight into Windows Azure then you might gain more benefit that I did.

The book is 270+ pages long but thats because it has probably the biggest font-size and line-spacing I have ever seen in a book (it actually makes it hard to read). From that point of view making this a "volume 1 of 4" looks a bit overcooked.

I wouldn't rule out buying the next volume but I'll be a bit more cautious.

This is a masterpiece.
Read this before your competitors do. Would you rather read many blogs and newspaper and still not getting the big picture or just read this book and have it all.

I used to work for Neudesic and a bit biased here but trust me, Pallmann is a genius.

I will start off with a full disclosure that I have worked with David and have reviewed this book before it came out in Press, I really like his way of explaining things using simple to understand models and then extending them to more complex scenarios.

The section on Pricing was one of the chapters I really liked. This book addresses a lot of concerns and debunks a few myths about the Azure Cloud offering. Explains the pricing model clearly to prevent the sticker shock. It explains these with sample scenarios that make the different dimensions of pricing easy to understand.

If you are a Sr Developer it helps you think about cloud as another tool in your toolkit. Throws lot of insight into migrating your applications to the cloud. The different roles , the components of the cloud ,things to keep in mind while designing a cloud solution.

If you are in job positions where you need to figure out how the cloud affects your business , understand what scenarios cloud brings value , want to think about the ROI that cloud brings , then this is a MUST have book for you.

The Windows Azure Handbook, Volume 1 by David Pallmann has just been published. It is the most up-to-date work on Windows Azure that I have seen so far. It is available in print or you can get it as an eBook.

Volume 1 is on Planning and Strategy. Subsequent volumes will cover Architecture, Development and Management.

This is an excellent book for anyone evaluating and planning for Windows Azure. It also provides an excellent comparisons of several other public cloud services including Amazon Web Services and Google AppEngine.

One of its strengths is detailed documentation of a complete methodology for evaluating the technical and business reasons for determining which of your applications should be moved to the cloud first.
