Book one of In Their Shoes: The Teacher
This is a story about a writer, well someone looking to write a book, who goes to a school and is going to shadow a teacher for the day. Insert Rachel Weir. She is the teacher that our writer Joy gets to follow. Right from the get go she is a interesting character. Within seconds of meeting Rachel she is vomiting in the bushes hung over. And it just gets more outrageous from there. Totally well worth a read.
Book two of In Their Shoes: The Actor
In this installment of In Their Shoes we find our favorite reporter Joy following around the famous actor Pat O Cake! Once again Joy is in for a wild ride with all the things a actor that is on the struggling side has to go through in one day! It is a absolute hilarious peek into the world of stardom. This is a must read!
Book three In Their Shoes: The Model
In this installment of In Their Shoes we see Joy following a Russian model Oksana Volkov. She is very tall and perfect (or so people think) in every way. In this book Joy finds herself in even more bizarre situations than in the last two books. And some of these situations are even more dangerous. I do feel bad for Joy at the end of this one. I don't think she signed on for all that happened to her. And just like any other government office looks like for the right price anything can go away.
I started my adventure with Andrew MacKay by reading The Artist (book 4), so this, the first book in the series, seemed rather tame in comparison. He truly captures the problems with current education system and the little hellions who inhabit that scary institution. There are plenty of jaw dropping, did-he-really-just-write-that moments that make you question why any parent would ever send their offspring to such a place. Each chapter is filled to the brim with off kilter humor and inappropriate language, so don't worry about falling asleep during this class... or erm... book!
Book 2, The Actor
This is my third Andrew MacKay book and so far my favorite. Sure there's still plenty of inappropriateness and lewd language, but the plot and content of this one flows brilliantly. Joy is such a lost soul at times and seems to always find herself in the most awkward situations. I'd love to have a prequel of just her life to see how she ended up the way she is. At times she can be full of fire and confidence, but other times she's so timid and goes with the flow (often seeming to lead her down a waterfall of disaster) when she shouldn't. This made-up world is so perfectly created, with references to books 1 and 3 in this one, which gives it a more evolved, in depth feel. The irreverence of this series is perfect for those who are annoyed with a PC culture and want to laugh at all the new taboo topics.
Book 3, The Model
This is the book in the series where things really start to get crazy, not that they were ever tame to begin with. Sure it starts out how any story about a reporter following a model, but then Mackay puts his own touch of madness into it and suddenly you have anything but an ordinary day-in-the-life piece.
There are so many great moments, phrases, and darkly hilarious snippets within these pages. If you're easily offended then I'm sure you haven't made it this far, which makes the odds of anyone reading this and not seeing it for the great entertainment value it is, low. Also, with Mackay, you pretty much know what you're getting into and you know he's going to try and take each book to one level beyond the next, so what you see is what you get.
And then there's that ending. It's like a bullet train picking up speed and violently crashing into a wall, but in a good way. I can't imagine how the next few books in this series will be able to contain the insanity, but I can't wait to find out what's in store.
