From the Inside Flap
Reeling from the sudden loss of his wife, his home, and his business, Alan Christoffersen, a once-successful advertising executive, has left everything he knew behind and set off on an extraordinary cross-country journey. Carrying only a backpack, he is walking from Seattle to Key West, the farthest destination on his map.
Now almost halfway through his trek, Alan sets out to walk the nearly 1,000 miles between South Dakota and St. Louis, but it's the people he meets along the way who give the journey its true meaning: a mysterious woman who follows Alan's walk for close to a hundred miles, the ghost hunter searching graveyards for his wife, and the elderly Polish man who gives Alan a ride and shares a story that Alan will never forget.
Full of hard-won wisdom and truth, The Road to Grace is a compelling and inspiring novel about hope, healing, grace, and the meaning of life.

Then Came You was absolutely fabulous! Written like a Jodi Picoult novel with different narrative voices or points of view, Then Came You tells the story of four women, with little in common, who become hopeless entangled with each other through a surprising common bond: a child. With infertility and science at the core of this novel, Then Came You is surprisingly emotional. How each of the four women come together to play a role in the life of this child is both beautiful and heartbreaking.
Weiner crafted a very well-written story. The characters came across as very honest and genuine. The plot of the novel, while it could have easily become bogged down by the mundane or unimportant, flowed crisply and really kept me engaged. I couldn't put this novel down because I was so invested in the characters and the plot. Weiner also evoked much emotion from me. I laughed aloud at portions of this book. I also cried.
Then Came You was an amazing read. One that I thought about long after I read the final page. I highly recommend this novel.
The first thing I'd say is that dealing with infertility is not this easy, even for billionaires. And the anonymity thing that clinics insist upon? They really do insist on it. And the feelings of a surrogate? Complex enough that what Annie does and feels in this book does not ring true, not at all. And the ending? I just can't imagine a world in which this situation would ever, ever occur. Much more likely? Litigation. Bitter fighting. Refusal to honor the various legal agreements in place.
The four main characters are two-dimensional. They don't struggle at all with their decisions regarding the infertility issue - and that's just amazing. Real people do. The characters struggle just a bit more with their romantic decisions, but just a bit. There's nothing here to make us buy in and cheer at the end.
In short, this novel is just too thin to be interesting. If it were Jennifer Weiner's first book, she might sell a few copies, but she wouldn't develop a cult following.
Written by one of my favorite adult authors, Then Came You has been high on my wish list for a while now, so when the chance finally arrived to read it, I was thrilled to say the least. Thankfully, Then Came You is yet another fabulous novel by Weiner. Inspiring, compelling, and heartwarming, it manages to pick you up within the first chapter and not let you down until the very last.
Then Came You tackles the heavily discussed topics of surrogacy and egg donorship within the lives of four very different women. It all began when India Bishop decided that there is only one way to secure the dream-worthy live with her new, wealthy husband she imagines and deservers: a baby. The problem? She's unable to have one, which brings Jules, the egg donor, and Annie, the surrogate, into the picture. Jules, a poor college student, and Annie, a young mother who wants to be the giver instead of the taker for once, are facing problems of their own, problems that will-hopefully-be alleviated with the money promised. Too bad Bettina, India's daughter-in-law, doesn't see the promise nor the goodness in India and her plans, and after a meeting with a promising detective, Bettina sets out to not only reveal India's secret past, but also ruin India. However, what happens when a surprising development leaves these women in disarray and...dependent on one another? Will they come to see the light in each other and their own problems as well as lives, or will everything end badly? Only time and more pages can tell in this promising new novel!Read more ›
