Top Customer Reviews

By George O'Leary TOP 500 REVIEWER on December 18, 2012
Format: Audio CD
There were/are three musical artists out there recording as Bobby Lewis, one who had two memorable Pop/R&B hits in 1961 with Tossin' And Turnin' and One Track Mind - and then disappeared from the charts, another who is a Jazz trumpeter/flugelhornist very highly regarded in and around Chicago but who has never had the pleasure of a national hit single, and this one who often used the title The Boy With The Lute.

Born in Hodgenville, Kentucky on May 9, 1942, this Country singer/songwriter, whose instrument of choice is a 6-string guitar-lute, racked up 26 Country charted singles from 1966 to 1985, 14 for United Artists, 5 for Ace Of Hearts, two with GRT, 3 for RPA and one each for Capricorn and HME. He also had 9 United Artists albums to his credit. And yet, while the other two have several multi-track CDs each on the market covering their music, all we see for this Bobby Lewis, in terms of CD compilations, is this 2011 12-track release from CD Baby titled Then And Now, which suggests it's a mix of his older and more recent recordings.

I understand that this review does not deal directly with the item you see here, nor do I have any idea which tracks were "then" and which are "now," and also cannot comment on the sound quality or whether or not it contains liner notes/discography. But the fact it's been around for a year without a review tells me that anyone else searching for his music has also hesitated to purchase it without some indication as to what they are obtaining. The 4 stars I assign is based solely upon the fact a 2011 CD release contains so few tracks. Once I see something providing those missing details I may (or may not) purchase a copy and will either adjust the rating accordingly, or delete it entirely.

This all new CD was recorded by Bobby Lewis and released in 2012. It was produced by Jim Loessberg in Round Rock, Texas, for the Heart of Texas Records label. It is filled with several of Bobby's previous hits including "From Heaven To Heartache" "Hello Mary Lou" "How Long Has It Been" along with some newly composed songs as well.

Bobby is singing very well and Heart of Texas Records decided to bring him back into the studio primarily because of that fact. The other was that his previous music was not available. We felt that Bobby was a great and viable artist and one that still enjoys entertaining to this day. We are certainly proud of "Bobby Lewis-Then And Now" and feel that you will be happy to add it to your collection!!

Country legend and Grand Ole Opry member Bobby Lewis holds the world record as the only known country singer who plays a 6-string guitar lute instead of a traditional 6-string acoustic guitar. Between 1963 and 1985, Lewis released ten albums and charted more than twenty-five songs on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. As most classic country music fans are aware, Bobby Lewis has traded a life of semi-retirement to continue performing and recording. Lewis has jointed the label Heart Of Texas Records to help preserve classic country music. This album features a combination of new material and classic songs, but the quality of the new compositions is comparable to that of the old material. If you buy this album, I would also recommend the second disc, "Then and Now."

Here I Am Again

"Here I Am Again-Country Variety Pack" features ten songs originally recorded in Texas in 1983. Those ten songs have been remastered with two additional compositions added to make a twelve song project including a duet with fellow Heart of Texas Recording artist Diane McCall.

The original songs include "Alice In Wonderland" "We Make A Great Country Song" "Here I Am Again" "Shutters and Boards" "When You're With Me" "Rock A Billy Days" "So Close I Can Taste It" "It Never Rains But It Pours" "Talk Back Trembling Lips" and "Show Me The Way." Bobby added two additional songs, which he composed, including In This State of Mind" and the Diane McCall duet of "World Of Love."

Produced by Jim Loessberg and Scotty Turner, Bobby Lewis "Here I Am Again-Country Variety Pack" features Hank Singer and Jimmy Belkin on fiddle, Dave Biller and Jerry Abbott on guitar, Justin Trevino on acoustic guitar and harmony vocals, Jim Loessberg and Garry Hogue on steel guitar, T. Bonta on piano and Jim Loessberg on drums and bass.
