“And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie starts off with a nursery rhyme that set the tone early that instantly had me hooked. It’s an occurring theme throughout the novel that I enjoyed and once I started reading, it was very hard to put down. I simply couldn’t stop reading because it’s that immersive and addictive.

Needless to say, Christie is the “Queen of Mystery” for a reason as this novel is absolutely incredible. Her classical style of writing is top-notch and I loved each character she introduced and developed. Each character was fully fleshed out and once events started happening, I genuinely enjoyed how fast-paced this novel was. I just couldn’t wait to see what would happen next and well, who else would be murdered.

Don’t worry, no spoilers here but my goodness, talk about pure madness. From the awesome plot twists to trying to figure out who was behind everything, it’s one of the best whodunnit mystery novels I’ve ever read. Just when I thought I figured it out, as Christie always does, I was nowhere close to the final reveal. The suspense and tension with each passing chapter were so great that it’ll keep you guessing until the very end.

Speaking of the ending, that completely and utterly blew me away. It was so brilliant that I can see why so many readers across the globe speak so fondly of “And Then There Were None” and the impact it had in this genre. Decades later it still holds up and will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

As mostly a horror reader, “And Then There Were None” flirts with my favorite genre as there were numerous times things got weird, creepy, and even a bit horrific. I loved those parts as it resonated well with me. All in all, this novel is just one of those stories you must read at least once in your life, it’s that impactful. Even if mystery isn’t a genre you love, this is easily one of the best mystery stories ever written. This was the novel that put Christie on the map as a best-selling novelist and it’s easy to see why.

“And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie gets a perfect 5/5 and is a murder mystery masterpiece. It’s a staple of the mystery genre and if you enjoy reading a solid murder mystery, this one is for you. It’s a quick read with memorable characters and an ending that is truly a bombshell moment. I will never forget this novel and will remember it for many years to come. In case you didn’t know, “And Then There Were None” is the world’s best-selling mystery novel, selling over 100 million copies, and is considered one of the greatest books of all time. I can’t recommend this book enough, it’s worth reading and then some.

Okay, I was listening to the audiobook read by Dan Stevens and got through chapter 14. I hadn't read this before, and I own I had to look up who was behind all of it before finishing it. I did finish reading it via Kindle. What a story. Psychological thriller, and nobody was nice in it. Well written! But not apt to be one I want to reread.

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is often listed as mystery or mystery-suspense. Actually I'd call it and out-and-out horror novel. Why? Because horror is "the anticipation of a terrifying outcome" and that's precisely what this book aims to be.

The plot is fiendishly simple. Eight people are invited to remote Soldier Island for a party. Waiting for them are a maid and butler, who inform the guests that their mysterious hosts will be arriving shortly. In the mean time, each person is handed a copy of the infamously gruesome little poem "Ten Little Indians.*" While waiting, one of the guests plays a gramophone, but instead of music the recorded voice announces that each member of the party -- including the maid and butler -- have committed, and gotten away with, some terrible crime, and that punishment is now at hand. The guests believe it's all just some macabre practical joke...until the first one of them dies. And when they realize that there is no way to communicate with the mainland, no way off the island until the scheduled boat arrives days later...panic begins to set in...and paranoia. Are they trapped on the island with a murderer hiding in the shadows...or is the murderer hiding in plain sight among them? Either way, the bodies are piling up fast, and for the dwindling number of survivors, the "anticipation of a terrifying outcome" grows both more unbearable and more certain with each passing moment. There is, it seems, no way to outrun your sins on Soldier Island...

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is a startlingly good book. Christie uses clever writing technique to introduce a very large cast of characters quickly, and also establish just the vaguest trace of menace from the very first pages; also to create numerous "red herrings" and to misdirect the reader at every possible turn as to the killer's identity. Despite a shortish length and a lightning pace, the characters -- Lawrence Wargrave, Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, General John Macarthur, Emily Brent, Anthony Marston, Dr Edward Armstrong and William Blore, and Thomas and Ethel Rogers -- are finely drawn and, in some cases, decidedly sympathetic because they actually regret their sins, which of course only makes the horror-suspense element of the novel all the more effective. The killer partially agrees, arranging the earliest deaths for those who are the least villainous, and the final ones for those who deserve to suffer agonies of suspense as they wait minute by minute for their own end to come.

No book is perfect, and the main flaw here is the last part of the novel, which consists of a large set-up to letting the killer explain their motives. The set-up is quite unnecessary and overly expositive and a single sentence introducing the actual confession, such as "The following was recovered in a bottle which washed up on a beach in East Anglia" would have sufficed. I feel Christie went a bit too far "behind the curtain" here, but the flaw is relatively minor.

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE was my first Agatha Christie book, but it won't be my last. Minor flaws aside, it's a terrific little novel that not only needs to be read, it needs to be read twice!

(* When the book was originally published, the poem was actually called "Ten Little N*****s"...as was the book. Then it became TEN LITTLE INDIANS. When that too became politically unacceptable, the name was changed once more to AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. Hopefully this is the last change...but you never know.)

I’ve never been a big fan of murder-mysteries as I find the subject of murder rather distasteful, but I realise they can present interesting intellectual puzzles so I was prepared to give this highly acclaimed work a go. I have never read any Christie previously.

First, a word on the title…
“And Then There Were None” is disastrous as a replacement title as it immediately leads the reader to expect all ten characters will die. If the original title is now considered racist, why not change it to “Ten Little Soldier Boys” as is currently used within the novel? In defence of AC I do not believe she was being racist in this work as one of the subplots excellently exposes a callous and barbarous racist attitude.

Now for the novel… SPOILERS AHEAD….
The first thing that struck me was the simple writing style which was close to that of a children’s novel. The second thing was the compactness of the plot and the speed of the action. Characters get bumped off at a rollicking rate. The relationship between pace, compactness and depth may be discussed among writers and readers ad infinitum- I won’t go into that here. The third thing I noticed is that some of the characters seem to ‘wobble’ and almost fall out of their own characters in places. Dr Armstrong swings to and fro from calm lead taker to panicky and irrational and displays an unlikely degree of gullibility. Rogers the butler seems totally unperturbed by the sudden death of his wife during the night and carries on making breakfast for all the guests like she is lying down with a headache. I don’t believe domestic servants in the 1930s were ever automatons like this. Perhaps he is in denial but there is no hint of him ever coming out of denial.

And now for the plot holes… with big spoilers so if you intend to read ATTWN please leave the following until afterwards.
1. General MacArthur discovers his wife’s extra-marital affair when she inadvertently places a letter to her lover and a letter to himself in the wrong envelopes. When he reads the letter meant for her boyfriend he should have known that the boyfriend would have received the other one and would have been equally aware of the discovery. This is never mentioned. He merely says “She never found out I knew…” and the two men continue as they were until the General manages to kill him. I kept thinking this was all going to come out as part of the plot but it didn’t. I suppose The General could have intercepted the other letter somehow but this is never mentioned or implied, for all we know the boyfriend could have got the other letter first.
2. Dr Armstrong kills a patient he is operating on because he was drunk. The idea of an entire team of medical staff at a hospital not realising he is worse for wear and not preventing him from going into theatre is ludicrous. We are meant to believe they just stood and watched him gowning up with shaky hands. It is implied that only one nurse was aware of his drunkenness. Very hard to swallow.
3. Anthony Marston killed two children by reckless driving and received only a one year ban. I looked at the Road Traffic Act 1930 and I understand that causing death by dangerous or reckless driving was considered manslaughter for which the maximum sentence was penal servitude for life. Much shorter sentences were common, but it seems extremely unlikely for anyone to get away without a custodial sentence of several years for two deaths. No explanation for this is offered. In addition, he is now driving recklessly again while banned, as the deaths he caused occurred in “November last” and the story is set in August. He seems not at all bothered to casually confess this to everyone but he would have known that the consequences of driving while banned would be severe. Reckless driving alone carried a maximum two year sentence, even without injuring anyone.
4. All the guests lock their bedrooms at night but Rogers wakes up Dr Armstrong by shaking him. Does he have a master key? This does not seem to bother Armstrong at all and it’s never mentioned again, but if there is a master key lying around somewhere this is critical to the plot. It would have been better if AC had written that Rogers woke up Armstrong by banging on his door and shouting.
5. In the murderer’s confession we learn he has managed to get several victims in the right place at the right time by about a billion to one chance. He says he has planned the order they must be killed, but how could he possibly know their movements around the house and grounds and manage to keep each murder in line with the rhyme without being seen? We expect to discover all this by the end, but although all his movements are explained it seems he simply had a series of very lucky strikes with the victims handily isolating themselves from the others in time for their appointed bumping off. Least believable of all is Blore under the bedroom window ready to have the clock thrown at him. I was expecting a fuller explanation of how the killer managed to position his victims.
6. It makes sense that a group of individuals aware of a killer among them will stay together at all times to give the murderer NO chances. Even though our intelligent victims manage to figure out this most obvious fact and agree to it, we still see them randomly dispersing all over the place in ones, twos and threes. Is AC trying to make a point about panic? It’s a bit thin. Craziest of all- they each go into their separate rooms at night! Do they really think a chair against the door will save them? Why not all remain together in the living room?
7. “Dear Village, you’ve never heard of me before, but I’m having a few guests over to my island for a house-party. If I’m delayed or don’t show up at all and you see them signalling SOS to the mainland, please ignore as it’s all part of a game. Thankyou.” The irony is mine but the message is totally unbelievable! Even if it had more credibility, how would he manage to tell everyone in the village? Thankfully the delivery guy decides to come over to see what’s up, but a huge storm blows up on cue to prevent him. It seems the murderer has the power to conjure up storms too!
8. Where on earth did the bee come from? Did the murderer keep it in his pocket, his spectacle case, where? The guests had already checked there were no hives on the island. It’s not likely that there are many wild ones buzzing round a small rocky island over a mile from shore, but are we meant to assume the murderer deftly swiped one from the nearest flower bed. Has anyone reading this book ever tried to catch a wild bee at a moment’s notice and pop it onto a window pane? My knowledge of wild bee handling is limited, but I do know they don’t take kindly to being caught. The guests meticulously searched the island. I’m sure they would have found a previously caught bee in a jar and thought it a bit odd.
9. Last but most annoying of all: The murderer manages to slip poison into his first victim’s drink in front of nine people in the same room. Apparently they were all distracted by Mrs Rogers fainting- how did he know she would do that? Even more disgraceful – he manages to sleep a narcotic into Miss Brent’s coffee at breakfast without five people noticing- five people who know that one of them is a murderer who intends to kill the rest and who has already achieved one death by poisoning a drink without anyone noticing. Would any of them really let another refill their coffee? And if they did, would they not all be scrutinising his movements carefully?

As this is considered the gold-standard of crime fiction- the most widely read author's masterpiece- I was a bit disappointed. There was no sense of satisfaction for me. It was all a bit childish and AC demands a huge suspension of disbelief. It did not do anything to raise my interest in the genre.

Regarded as Christie's masterpiece, the most difficult of her books to write and more than 100 million copies sold worldwide to cement the reputation of Christie as the Queen of Crime. Sarah Phelp's recent adaptation of the book was atmospheric and gripping with a stellar cast lead by Charles Dance, Aidan Turner and Sam Neill.
The book needed an epilogue to explain who the culprit was and why he had chosen his particular victims for this fantastical crime, "something stupendous-out of the common. Something theatrical, impossible." Sir Thomas Legge, the Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard and Inspector Maine try to piece it together after the discovery of the bodies and can't quite get it right.
"Some fanatic with a bee in his bonnet about justice. He was out to get people who were beyond the reach of the law. He picked ten people-whether they were really guilty or not doesn't matter." The manner of their deaths resembled the children's nursery rhyme hung in each of the bedrooms. (Frank Green 1869)
Christie decided to include a simple device of a message in a bottle. More formally it was referred to as a manuscript document sent to Scotland Yard by the master of the Emma Jane fishing trawler. This amounted to a confession by the murderer before killing himself. It was enclosed in a bottle, sealed and cast into the sea. It neatly sums up what the police were unable to do and reveals the instability and dangerous nature of the murderer: "I have a definite sadistic delight in seeing or causing death." He wanted it to be on a grand scale and it was!
The story is set in August 1939 and centres around an island off the coast of Devon called Soldier Island. The island was engulfed in mystery and was isolated, prone to storms so it proved the perfect venue to carry out mass murder. When there is a south-easterly wind you can’t land on the island. Sometimes it can be cut off for a week or more. An American millionaire, Elmer Robson, had bought the island and he had built a luxurious and modern house where his guests stayed. There were more recent rumours that Gabrielle Turl, the Hollywood film star had bought it. This couldn't be verified. We do know that a Mr and Mrs U.N.Owen had bought the island recently and they had employed a Mr Isaac Morris to invite a number of people to the island. He was able to concoct a suitable bait for each of his victims to entice them to spend a week on the island before killing them, one at a time.
The characters are introduced as they are travelling from various destinations to Soldier Island. Justice Wargrave has just retired from the bench after a long and successful career. It seemed that he had been invited by an old friend, Constance Culmington to catch up on the old days and commune with nature. He hadn't seen her for seven or eight years. He thinks that even Constance could have bought the island. He was known as the hanging judge. He had a great power with the juries: “it was said he could make their minds up for them any day of the week.”
Vera Claythorne was looking forward to being offered a summer job on the island. She had been teaching games in a third-rate school and had had a strenuous term. Working as Mrs Owen’s secretary sounded enticing. Philip Lombard was a ruthless mercenary. He had been offered a hundred guineas to keep a look-out. He was broke so he accepted the assignment. We are told continually that he moved like a panther and likened to a beast of prey. He is the only guest to carry a revolver which makes him one of the chief suspects once the killing spree begins.
Emily Brent is a religious fanatic. She had received a letter from an old acquaintance from Bellhaven Guest House inviting her for a free holiday on the island. Her income had been reduced so a free holiday was always welcoming. She reads from her Bible about the day of judgment: “the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.” General Macarthur seemed to have received an invitation from his cronies. He had mixed feelings when he landed, delight as he climbed the stairs followed by unease. Dr Armstrong was sent a cheque asking him to keep an eye on Owen’s wife without alarming her. Owen’s wife didn’t appear!
Mr Blore was using a pseudonym, Davis and had invented a story that he was from South Africa. Lombard spots the deceit immediately. Blore was an ex-detective. Mr and Mrs Rodgers were the butler and his wife, the cook. Dr. Armstrong was in need of a long holiday. He found Soldier Island magical, a world of fantasy. “You lost touch with the world-an island was a world of its own. A world, perhaps, from which you might never return.” Christie throws in plenty of clues to keep us on our guard. Something is very odd. Even the characters feel it. They eyed each erring on the side of caution. Then there was Anthony Marston who came for the drink and the prospect of women. Rich and spoilt. The first to be poisoned.
After dinner together, the guests relaxed and started to open up a little with more freedom and intimacy. Marston noticed ten little china figures sitting on the table, looking quite harmless but odd. And then it happened… There was a voice without warning, inhuman, penetrating accusing the guests of crimes committed- causing the deaths of other fellow men, with dates included. They are addressed as prisoners at the bar. There was a petrified silence followed by anger and shock. Then there’s a touch of Lord of the Flies with evidence that a madman (or woman) is out to kill each and every one of them. Suspicion, paranoia, trapped on the island with a madman intent on killing.
By the time three survivors remained Lombard suggested heliographing with a mirror, sending out an SOS in the hope of a rescue from the mainland. Some of them kept diaries and notes so it was possible for the police to piece together vital clues.
The man, Isaac Morris who had provisioned the island and made all the necessary arrangements died. Was he also killed? “He explained to the people down there (Sticklehaven) that there was some experiment on-some bet about living on a “desert island” for a week-and that no notice was to be taken of any appeal for help from out there.”
It’s a clever book and you’ll probably have to read it through right to the end before you discover the murderer. You won’t be disappointed.
