Editorial Reviews

Review

"In his first and most fascinating book, Veblen was mocking a process as old as civilization. He expressed his skepticism in a rough-hewn prose style which made him the most impressive American satirist of his day."

 —Time

"Every brash, upcoming generation should discover Veblen, and most complacent adults need to rediscover him."

 —The Minneapolis Tribune

5.0 out of 5 stars How status seeking affects consumption and society
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2019
The Theory of the Leisure Class is definitely an interesting book and from first reading, one can see that the book contains a lot of truth. Veblen’s main contribution is that people care a lot about status and thus their economic behaviours will reflect this. In order to turn wealth into status, one needs to signal their wealth, which leads to phenomena of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure. In practice, this means people need to waste money on consumer products and activities that immediately lets other people know their status of being wealthy and being in the upper class. This theory goes a long way in helping us understand the nature of the human social structure. Whether conspicuous consumption is a “good” thing is up to the opinions of readers although Veblen himself did not seem particularly happy with it. It is worth noting that this book is not simply a theory of the leisure class, but more of a general theory on society that seeks to explain how society functions and evolves due to status seeking behaviours.

As for the product quality, the book quality is excellent, and the paper used for the interior pages is of high quality.
