Theory for the Working Sociologist
Purchase options and add-ons
Drawing on dozens of empirical studies that define modern sociology and focusing on the nuts and bolts of social explanation, Rojas reveals how areas of study within the field of sociology that at first glance seem dissimilar are, in fact, linked by shared theoretical underpinnings. In doing so, he elucidates classical and contemporary theory, and connects both to essential sociological findings made throughout the history of the field. Aimed at undergraduate students, graduate students, journalists, and interested general readers who want a more formal way to understand social life, Theory for the Working Sociologist presents the underlying themes of sociological thought using contemporary research and plain language.

Editorial Reviews
Review
This highly readable and accessible book will soon become required reading for upper-level undergraduate and doctoral students of sociology. Rather than merely revisiting and reinterpreting core texts of abstract sociological theory, Rojas identifies four core themes of sociological theory―power and inequality, strategic action, values and social structures, and social constructionism―that motivate empirical work and lead sociologists to generate explanations for why empirical patterns exist. -- Sarah Soule, Stanford University

- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020It helps understand everything going on in social theory.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2018The book is especially helpful for a graduate student in sociology to learn how to create a typology of different social theories. It offers an excellent overview of various types of argumentation, and discussions regarding various research topics in social sciences. Highly recommend to an early graduate student in sociology.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2021The cover was correct but the book printed on the inside was a book for 4th graders called prairie school. They were cool about returns but I'm just hoping someone see's this so they can make sure it doesn't happen in the future & because i remember seeing other reviews that the books were printed upside down
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017I am so very mad and disappointed. First, though I ordered through prime, the book arrived weeks late—already setting me back in a class. On top of that, the book is literally printed upside-down and backwards. It’s impossible to read but I can’t return it because I need it for a course.
