We usually leave the book with the children because they have enjoyed it so much. We find all of Charmaine's books not only
to have enjoyable stories, but books that teach children to care about others. Books with a purpose.
Children learn that service dogs like Toby wear a special vest to identify them. In this story, Toby also wears a red bandana.
Toby befriends eager Simon, fearful Sarah, tearful Miguel, and Mrs. Smith. The author draws you in through Toby's gentle caring as he wins them over with love.
I read this book to my grandchildren, 9-year-old Ethan and 5-year-old Allyssa. They paid attention, loved the story, and the pictures. Charmaine ends this charming tale by asking her readers a few questions and both grandchildren discussed them easily because they were captivated and listened well.
Since my grandkids recently acquired a lively puppy, I asked them if they could imagine" Hazel" becoming a pet therapy dog. "No." they answered, "unless Hazel calms down and gets lots of training."
If you've ever loved a dog, you'll understand how Toby will win your heart and the hearts of your children.

This book is fun and educational with questions at the end of the book about enhancing children's critical thinking skills about the story. I always like illustrations that help tell the story and Rose Prevec did just that. I highly recommended this book for classroom teaching.
Note that a therapy dog is a friend to everyone! Therapy dogs are extremely patient, loving and provide great companionship.

Toby and his Hospital Friends is an adorable picture book about a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who spends his Wednesday's at the hospital as a therapy service dog. He visits his friends at the hospital weekly where he brightens their day and helps them feel better.
My kids and I love this book! The illustration is cute and colorful. The story is heartwarming and can teach many life lessons such as caring, compassion, kindness, friendship and peer support.
This story is great for kids and families but would also be amazing to be stocked in pediatric wing of hospitals that allow pet therapy. It would also be a perfect handout for kids who are visited by therapy dogs.
I highly recommend reading this book and sharing with others!
The illustrations are so beautiful and a lot of fun. My girls loved looking at them all. One of their absolute favorites was Toby running around Miss Charmaine. They thought it was so funny. I loved Toby's red bandanna and his little teddy bear!
I really had a lot of fun reading Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog, and His Hospital Friends with my children. They loved hearing it, too. My five year old is learning to read in school and she read the book, mostly, by herself. I mean Charmaine is a big word for a little girl.
I think that this is a book that little kids will really enjoy. Parents will love it, too, for the great lesson it teaches their children.
Toby is a big, brown, happy dog. Every week, his owner, Miss Charmaine takes him to visit and comfort children who are in the hospital. Follow Toby the service dog for a day, and see how he makes friends with the children, and helps to make them happy.
* Beautifully illustrated, Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog teaches young readers the wonders of being of service to others.
* A simple, happy story that also sends a positive message about community, as well as the importance of kindness to pets.
