Editorial Reviews

Review

5 star review - "Claire's an intriguing character who has somehow gotten life and gestation inextricably entwined, despite her own inability to bear children. She's the kind of character that makes you shake your head in puzzlement sometimes, and want to shout that there's really more to life. Her story is filled with zany escapades and the most embarrassing set of moments possible, and yet she keeps on trying, and it's a joy to watch as she finally gets it all. There Are No Men is angst and high comedy and mixed-up romance all rolled up in a neat and tidy package, and it's highly recommended. - Reader's Favorite

"There Are No men is a wickedly skewed, heartbreakingly sad and hysterically funny tale" - Dii at tometenderblogspot.com

"Carol Maloney Scott appears to have a knack for writing humour mixed with warmth and romance, with a very addictive plot line thrown in on top for good measure." - Bookaholic Holly

"I loved Claire, she was the perfect lead character for this type of novel, she was fun, crazy and clumsy but so real" - Emma's Reviews

"Maloney Scott delivers a laugh-out-loud, touching, substantive story of a woman searching for her knight in shining armor and finding herself in the process." - Julie at SmartnSassyReviews

"light, fun, and had just enough suspense to it that it always kept me wondering" - Busy Brunette

It has been a few years (sad to say) since I've picked up a book and read it all the way through... too many other distractions and nothing held my attention.... until "There Are No Men". Divorced at 31 and single until recently at age 53, I could relate to every event in this book and boy, did I Laugh Out Loud! You know you're enjoying a book when you're at the gym thinking you'll do 30 minutes on the elliptical and the next thing you know an hour has gone by and you still don't want to get off the thing b/c you're enjoying the book so much.

Get this book and read it now .... you will laugh out loud..... with Claire... at Claire... and.. you will also enjoy the other characters in the book including her dog, Dixie. I have to admit... when I realized there were only 2 chapters left I put the book down for a few days... I dreaded coming to the end. Can't wait for the follow-up book!

I received a complementary copy of There Are No Men in exchange for my honest review.

There Are No Men is about Claire trying to find a man worthy of a relationship. She has been divorced for 2 years and has had an hysterectomy so can't have children which makes her feel she is lacking since she has always wanted to be a mother. Her friends have set her up on many dates but none of the men are worth a second date. She tries Internet dating. While these dates are hysterical none of the men are right for her. She is 36 so when two men in their mid to late twenties show they are interested in her, she brushes them off for various reasons. Mainly because of their ages and because she can't have children which she expects them to want.

I couldn't connect with the heroine in this book and found her irritating often. She was constantly wearing shoes with heels that were too high and hurt her feet. I mean, really, how good can you look if you can't walk straight in your shoes?

I didn't like that the author had two such similar men interested in Claire I would have found it more believable if there had been just one man or two very different men. I also had issues with the main character's over drinking so often. I thought she cried too much too. I would have liked to see Claire do some other dumb thing - even though we are told she is smart, I didn't see it.

I liked the way the secondary characters helped the story along whether you liked them or not. And her dog, Dixie, was a nice addition. Dixie filled the spot of not having children in Claire's life.

This is such a humorous story, especially the description of her terrible dates near the beginning of the book. I was chuckling often throughout it.

Please note that these are just my opinion of this book and you may not share my thoughts so give it a try if you like humorous chic-lit.

I expected to like this book a lot more than I did - it had great reviews and was billed as a rom-com.

But "There Are No Men" is neither funny nor romantic: nothing actually happens aside from the main character moaning, thinking, and stumbling awkwardly until more than 75% of the book is over. There are a plethora of characters who serve little to no purpose, and many details which fail to contribute anything.

The ending isn't predictable, but in a bad way: the reader has no idea what will happen, because everything up to the point at which the conclusion is revealed feels completely irrelevant and without direction.

Absolute waste of time, and not worth the read.

What's a girl to do when she leaves her husband, can't find a date worth writing home about even though strange men seem to keep falling in her lap, and now has to market a series of erotic fiction that she has no desire to push on her unsuspecting clientèle? Claire is 30-something and finally ready to move on from her failed marriage but is having nothing but a string of awful first dates. Then a new neighbor moves in. Hunky, young, and definitely interested, Brandon may be just what Claire needs. Where there was a lack of interesting and available men, Claire is suddenly inundated with young studs who want nothing more than to date her. But who will she choose?

If you're in the market for a light hearted, witty, and genuinely funny story, then look no further than There Are No Men. I'm a quick reader in general, but I was able to breeze through this one in only a day and a half (and that's with three young children, a dog, and a full time job). There are some mentions of infertility so if that's trigger for you, you may want to skip this one, but in general this was a light, easy, and delightful read. My favorite character was Claire's dog, Dixie. That may be surprising to some, but she had a big personality for such a tiny animal, and I couldn't help but laugh loudly at her antics. Claire's best friend and neighbor along with her husband were also equally wonderful and well flashed out characters who helped drive the plot without making me wonder why they weren't the main characters (although I do look forward to them getting their own sequel eventually).

I received an advanced reader's copy for an honest review. This had no bearing on my opinion of this book.

The premise of the story is good. The first couple of chapters showed promise, wit, and humor....then it went downhill fast. The main character whines on and on in every single chapter about not being able to have a child. It was like Groundhog Day, with each chapter just full of the same whining, the same babble about needing to desperately find that old, reliable childless man, and the same drunken binges with bad shoes. Page after page of the same material. I kept hoping it would get better, but unfortunately this book was a big disappointment.
