From AudioFile

Skip Hinnant is clearly enjoying himself as he reads the rhyming text of this cumulative story. Jaunty music, frequent sound effects, and an occasional giggle accompany Hinnant's measured pace, giving time for the reader to appreciate the hilarious illustrations in the short book, which is included. The listener can easily join in with the repetitive text as the character swallows increasingly impossible beach discoveries--a shell, a fish, a seagull, sand, and finally a wave--to produce a funny surprise ending. This set is part of a series based on the folk song "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," popularized by the great Pete Seeger. The rhyming text and the wonderfull illustrations in this particular work are absolutely captivating. There was an old lady who swallowed a shell, also an assortment of other items such as a crab, fish, gull, and on and on. The rhyme is a chain rhyme which can go one and on. It is actually fun, while reading this one to a class of kids, or a one on one read, to have the children or child, actually make up other rhyming lines to go along with the story. I have been able to captivate a class for a good 45 or more minutes using this book as a prompt. As stated, the illustrations are quite appealing and both they and the text are quirky enough that most adults enjoy the read along with the child. I do recommend this one quite highly.

What an adorable book! My son is 1 1/2 and loves "there was an old lady" books. They are very sing-songy and keep his attention well. He always laughs when we read "I don't know why she swallowed the shell". The book is repetitive making it easy for him to follow along and say words he knows in the book. I was able to purchase this book gently used from Amazon, which saved us a ton of money! This book is definitely a keeper!

I would "sing read" all of the "There Was an Old Lady..." stories in my general music classroom. It was a favorite amongst all of my grades...especially my lower elementary students. They always knew when a holiday or new season was approaching, I would pull one of these out. They would sing it with me!

I bought this book for my preschool children (ages 3-4 yrs) and they loved it. This one has a more positive look on it where as the fly book was all about death and this one is all about the beach and living in California on the beach the children could really relate to it.

The only down side (If you were to even call it a downside) is that there isn't as much stuff going on in this version. The fly book (newer version at least) gave the reader a great oppertunity to be silly and act out all the different voices "He missed out on the sauce...Even the artist is crying...I think i'll have a ham on rye...Ect." This one there is great, wonderful illistrations but only 1-2 sentences per page.

Very satisfied with my purchase they children ask for it, and love it!

The product is as advertised and no surprise.
But really disappointed with the packaging especially because the books were new.
All the books in the package was bent and crushed in all four corners.

My students loved to read along with the repetition and rhyme which is great for the special needs population I teach. You will not be disappointed if you use this book to talk about a summer or beach thematic unit!

This would be a great book to utilize during an ocean or beach theme. It has great ability for children to sequence the objects, retell, what object was 1st swallowed....etc. My students loved the book.

A cute book that fits right into my June/Beach theme in my speech therapy classroom! I have several of the "There Was an Old Lady..." books and my students like seeing what she swallows in each one. Great practice for memory skills and sequence as well as repetition of sounds, words and fun vocabulary for little ones!
