For sci-fi aficionados, all the pre-requisite struggles are explored - alternative realms, worlds beyond tomorrow, machines, epic journeys, technology and alien races. The one constant is humanity itself.
There is a large variety of writing styles, but the quality remains consistent as do the imaginative plots (as a fan of Vonnegut, I particularly enjoyed "Open Letter to Non-Robotic Scientists" - as well as "Inchoate" and the superbly titled "Nevermind the Bollocks").
Therefore I Am is a fantastic collection - every story is a winner.
This collection contains 10 short stories that run the spectrum of science fiction, some are more hard sci-fi and some incorporate a little fantasy. I think "Waiting Room" was my favorite story, but I enjoyed all of them.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Well, I am delighted to say that this book surprised me! These stories are genuine short stories, with a beginning, middle, and end - not a cliff-hanger and a "To Be Continued". They make you want more only in the very best sense, when you find an author you enjoy, and decide you'd like to find out what else they have written.
Each story is different. Each has different strengths and weaknesses. Heck, they're short stories - by the time I tried to tell you anything about them I would have had enough "spoilers" to ruin the party. So, I'm not going to go there.
In my opinion, they are all worth a read. And in this day and age, even that is really saying something.
I received the digital copy of this book free in exchange for my agreement to provide an honest review. If you look at my profile, you will see that e-Books have not been treated kindly by me, and in fact I had decided to stop reading and reviewing them altogether, but had already received this one, so I had to finish. Well, happy to be proven wrong.
I will definitely be looking up past and future editions of Digital Science Fiction Anthology, as well as searching for other works by several of the authors featured here.
My favorite books are all sci-fi or fantasy books, so I have high expectations of my sci-fi novels. This doesn't rank up there with my faves, and I doubt I'm likely to re-read it, but it is definitely good!
There really is something for everyone in here. A whole slew of various futures and scenarios, so that was really great. And the writing is surprisingly good. I've tested out some of these e-books and haven't even gotten through the first 3 pages. This is much higher quality, and is written by writers who know how to tell a good story. They are also easy to read; not a lot of wordiness just for the sake of "sounding" smart, or feeling pretentious. Just good sci-fi, written in a way that makes it pleasant to read. I read this while reading other books simultaneously. The short stories give a nice break now and then.
Overall, I'm really pleased with the quality of this, and VERY pleasantly surprised by it. Definitely worth a read if you are looking for something to give you a distraction throughout your day.
