There's Just One Problem...: True Tales from the Former, One-Time, 7th Most Powerful Person in WWE Hardcover – August 16, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
With untold stories from a career spanning over 15 years and featuring the biggest names and controversial moments in wrestling history, THERE'S JUST ONE PROBLEM is an honest, unflinching look on how an introverted life-long fan unexpectedly became one the most powerful men in all of professional wrestling.
For decades wrestling was shrouded in secrecy. It had larger than life personalities, bone crunching physicality and jaw-dropping theatrics but backstage it was an industry devoid of outsiders. Then in 1999, after working together on a special for MTV, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned to 26-year old television writer Brian Gewirtz and asked “You ever consider writing for WWE?” That question, and its answer, would have a profound effect on both of their lives for years to come.
THERE'S JUST ONE PROBLEM is a story about perseverance, tenacity, and steel chairs. Most writers in the WWE last for a matter of months; Gewirtz was there for over 15 years, writing some of most memorable and infamous storylines in WWE history (covering the “Attitude Era”, the “Ruthless Aggression Era” and into the “PG” and “Reality” eras).
Throughout this journey Gewirtz found himself becoming both friend and antagonist to some of the biggest names in WWE history – Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, Stephanie McMahon, Bill Goldberg, Paul Heyman, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, and the two men who he worked the most closely with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. These men not only shaped his life professionally but also personally, forcing him to grow and change both as a writer and a human being.
So how does a lifelong fan and outsider break through to become the ultimate insider? How does a low-key personality deal directly with his boss, the most brash, unpredictable “alpha male” on the planet, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon? How does one gain respect in a locker room that wants nothing more than to see him disappear? Where does one go when every year in wrestling takes you further away from the writing career you always wanted? Taking advice from his idol, the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, when you’re so full of fear, there’s only one way to push through: become fearless.

Review
His long, storied and unbelievable tenure in WWE, is truly what legends are made of."―Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
"Brian and I are kindred spirits. Amidst allegations of Flash action figure payola, the infamous wrestlers court, multitudes of laughs, made-up words, 5 second poses, roasting local sports teams and battling at WrestleMania in my hometown over a Japanese shampoo endorsement (you knew I had to mention it), we’ve both ended up where we needed to be. Keep the world smiling, Brian. As you do in this book. Wrestling’s version of War and Peace. Or a great, comedic book that involves writing outlandish scenarios for men in tights. Whichever. I’ll be over here still wearing spandex."―Adam "Edge" Copeland, Canadian professional wrestler and actor
“This is the best book I have read in years. If you’re a fan of WWE, or heck, even if you’re not, this inside look into the life of one of the most intense jobs in all of entertainment, a WWE writer, hilariously detailed by one of the most impactful writers and creative contributors in WWE history is nothing short of fascinating. It’s a laugh out loud, can’t put down, sad that it’s over kind of book and I loved every second of it. Apart from, of course, when it was over.”―Becky Lynch, WWE Superstar and six-time WWE Women’s Champion
“In the book, THERE'S JUST ONE PROBLEM, written by the most talented writer in the history of the WWE, Brian Gewirtz (my opinion), Brian takes you on a roller coaster ride in regards to his amazing time writing in the WWE. Brian even discusses his “day” in wrestlers court, where he was the first and only writer in WWE to have to go in front of a judge (actually a wrestler) and pay his debt for “allegedly” favoring to write for his favorite wrestlers. He survived!!! This book is as entertaining as the scripts Brian wrote during his amazing career in the WWE. This book is a must read.”―Kurt Angle, WWE Hall of Famer and Olympic Gold Medalist
"I simply could not put this tremendous book down, finishing it in two sittings within a single day—and lost count of how many times I laughed out loud along the way. Brian Gewirtz has an instant wrestling classic on his hands here; a very enjoyable romp down memory lane, with a unique perspective from a man who was either in the middle of, or very close to some of the greatest (and not so great) moments in WWE history. With unfettered access to WWE boss Vince McMahon, and as one of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson’s closest confidants, Brian Gewirtz is the perfect person to chronicle the hectic and sometimes surreal behind-the-scenes chaos of the WWE creative process—and he delivers the goods in insightful and hilarious fashion."―Mick Foley, WWE Hall of Famer and multi-time New York Times bestselling author
"Every wrestling fan will love this book. The stories are truly amazing! I couldn't put it down."―Ken Jeong, stand-up comedian, actor, producer, and writer
"I never met someone in the wrestling business that wasn’t a wrestler that had as much knowledge and insight as Brian. There would not be a King Bookah without a Brian Gewirtz."―Booker T, WWE Hall of Famer and five-time WCW Champion
"Not nearly enough Miz."―The Miz
"An entertaining look at life backstage beyond the ropes."―Kirkus

- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA hilarious read that had me laughing aloud and turning the pages in rapid succession. Gewirtz brings us inside the self-deprecating, sardonic internal dialogue of a man who’s career in TV writing took a strange detour through the operatic universe of a childhood obsession. Gewirtz was an outsider, who became an insider and once an insider, he rose to become the “7th most powerful person in WWE”. And how outrageous that journey was. Was he the hero? Hard to say. He thinks he is. Doesn’t matter because he’s funny as shit.
As a wrestling novice, I worried that I would not be able to follow all the storylines, characters, and terminology this book was sure to expect of me. But, the writing proved accessible and easy going. I relished getting a small peak behind the curtain at this iconic company and the inner workings of the author’s mind as he navigated relationships, questionable traditions, and his own aspirations all while learning from one of the most successful and prolific trailblazers in sports entertainment.
Kudos to Gewirtz for stepping out of his comfort zone and into the spotlight to give us some new perspective, stories and laughs! I look forward to TJOP volume 2, and one day I hope for a follow up that will give us an inside look at his current company, Seven Bucks Productions.
This book will make a great Christmas gift for the wrestling fans in your life, and is a cathartic read for anyone facing a larger-than-life opportunity that may feel like a detour from their original dream.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseBrian has provided us a glimpse behind the curtain in WWE. He mostly tells about his interaction with various Wrestlers who worked with their characters over his career in WWE. Seems like the Rock and Cena were his best. For working there a long time, boy a lot of drama to work in WWE. Sounds like a bunch of big children you have to babysit. I have been a fan for over 50 years, so these new stories are ones I have not heard. I would have liked more secret dirt, or maybe a profile of Mr McMahon, or HHH, or maybe Stephanie. But for what it is worth, I still think if you are a fan, and like the backstage stuff, you should like this. I wanted more details on each story. But for his 1st book, I think it is good and worth the time. I paid under $20 for the hardcover version. Nice!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI kind of figured I thought this would be an okay book when I bought it but boy was I wrong. It is a page Turner well written full of anecdotes about his experiences in the WWF and an all-around treat to read at the pool in the summer when it's hot... His writing style is great readable approachable understandable and just downright funny and you can tell that he is serious fan and I appreciate this book and recommend it to anybody else looking for something to bang through this summer while at the pool.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAfter reading this book it made me realize why Brian was definitely one of the best writers to ever write for WWE programming. Lots of great stories about some of your favorite Superstars (and Miz) and gave a great insight about Vince Mcmahon himself. This book is not only for wrestling fans but also for anyone wanting to get a peep inside the world of tv writing. The what to do”s and the what not to do’s. How to handle the high pressure stress of a job of this caliber. Brian is a wonderful person and I am very happy that I had the chance to work with him in WWE. If only he would of written more stories involving the referees!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is a very interesting look behind the scenes of wwe. The author(who spent 16 years in wwe and now works for the Rock’s production companies) tells very interesting stories of stuff he came up with while working there and adds lots of humor to it! If you’re a wwe fan and are interested in the behind the scenes workings, buy this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseNot a bad book if you are a wrestling fan. It was not a page burner for me but I had no problem finishing it. After reading it, I would think WWE should require any new writer for their show to read this book on their first day! LOL - It seemed to have ALOT of good information if you wanted to try your hand at writing a vignette! Also a good look into the how it all works backstage. NOTE: I did not know when you watch SNL, that same show was preformed before a smaller live audience earlier that day to gage reaction of material. So there you go - as long as I learn something from a book, it's all good!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA quick read. Very entertaining. An honest review of the backstage workings of WWE

Good book. Great stories about backstage stuff.
Rohan NarainReviewed in India on September 10, 20225.0 out of 5 stars As a longtime WWE fan, it's one of the most interesting, funniest and engaging books I've ever read!
If you're a longtime WWE fan, especially a fan on WWE in the 2000s and 2010s, this book provides a fascinating look into the creative process during that era of WWE. Besides that, it's really funny and fun to read about all the peaks and valleys that one deals with when dealing with Huge personalities like The Rock, John Cena, and of course, Vince Mcmahon.
Bp1Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 20255.0 out of 5 stars I didn't even watch this Era and I'm hooked
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI love reading wrestling books cause I mean who else lived these crazy wild life's... So when I read that's it's a "bloody WWF writer" I wanted to hate it, I mean "writers ruined Wrestling" was my mind set
Now I still hold that opinion (rightly or wrongly brother) but this has been a fantastic read
I really enjoy his self deprecating humor but it's a great style of writing and I hope some day he picks up his typewriter and dusts off another one as I'll buy it immediately.
Sometimes I feel wrestling books while wildly entertaining leave a certain sense of heaviness or sadness, this book had me smiling throughout with a few laugh out loud moments
And I have gone back and watched Eras of wrestling I had written of as awful with a new set of eyes and now a great fondness for , Particularly 2006 Cyber Sunday I just watvhed it and loved every moment of it
Just buy the book... It's great
