*2017 Digital Trends Outdoor Awards: Most Innovative Gear – Winner
'Thermacell’s Backpacker Mosquito Repeller has innovation mastered perfectly... Even the longest of camping trips can remain bug-free with this device. Perhaps its best feature is the fact it doesn’t just defend against armies of annoying bugs across a small patch of one’s campsite, instead, it sets up a 15 by 15-foot area of protection. [This] allowed us to move the Backpacker all over our campsites, creating bug-free zones wherever we moved to. A no-brainer for anyone who hates swatting bugs out of their face while camping, Thermacell’s innovative Backpacker Mosquito Repeller easily made our camping trips more enjoyable, and became an instant staple of our quiver of gear from the moment we started using it.'

The Thermacell MR-BP Backpacker Mosquito Repeller effectively repels mosquitoes by creating a 15-foot zone of protection. Utilizing the same camping gas canisters (not included) that backpackers and campers have in their bag already, the compact and lightweight Backpacker Repeller is an essential piece of gear. It’s also ideal for use while fishing, gardening, hunting, around the backyard, and more. Heat produced by the camping gas canister is directed to a small mat infused with the repellent Allethrin, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring repellent found in chrysanthemum flowers. Heat disperses the repellent creating the 15-foot zone of protection. Thermacell protects millions of people from mosquitoes with no messy sprays or lotions, no scent, no noise, no DEET, and no open flames. For best results, use on days with light or no wind (bugs are at their worst on these days), and allow 10-15 minutes to form a complete zone of protection around the unit. Dependable performance up to 7,000 feet of elevation. Usage tips include: do not attempt to use with refilled canisters, allow gas to flow for 5 seconds before clicking the piezo ignitor, and only compatible with valves designed to the EN417 specification. Thermacell products are safe, effective, and come with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. With Thermacell, Turn it on… Mosquitoes GONE!

The product contained in the blue mat is very effective at deterring the little buggers. Mind you, there's always the possibility that one or two didn't get the memo and will land on you, but my experience overall has been remarkably good. My primary complaint with the standard model, is the cost and unreliability of the butane refills. Also, you can't fly with them (I had a dozen of them thrown away on one trip). Plus, I've never been able to keep them lit consistently over 5,000 feet, and occasionally, they go out for no reason - even at sea level.
Secondly, the ooze from the liquid in the mats, eventually builds up over time and it is really nasty stuff. A couple drops took the paint off the top of my aluminum anodized deck table. It will eventually ruin the plastic housing on the unit itself. It's the consistency of dried syrup and nothing I've found will remove it easily. So when I saw this model, I was more than a little intrigued. Say goodbye to the butane refills. An 8oz. iso cart will provide up to 180 hours of run time. Of course that would require 45 mats, but hey, you get the point. As another reviewer mentioned, with the proper adaptor, you can also run it from a propane cylinder, though I STRONGLY suggest you don't do that. Iso-butane operates at a different temperature and pressure than propane. Using an adaptor in combination with a propane tank, at the very least will shorten the life of the product and may result in a clogged valve, rendering the unit inoperative.
After reading a number of negative reviews about the product here on Amazon, I was concerned it may not work, I now wonder how many of the bad reviews here are related to using an adaptor with the wrong fuel. That said, I'm glad I went ahead and bought it. Frankly, I'm convinced most other problems reported here are related to either the type of iso cylinder, or simply not screwing the unit all the way down onto the cylinder.
Some iso canisters have a slightly shorter valve stem, and that can result in the actuator needle not fully depressing the release valve. I've personally had issues with Coleman iso canisters, but Primus, MSR, Jet Boil and others work fine for me.
Best of all, this unit uses exactly the same mats the standard Thermacell units use. I do wish it was a couple ounces lighter, but hey, at just 4oz it's worth it. In combination with Permethrin treated clothing and some concentrated Deet for backup, you should be bite free. I'm one happy camper!
I don't know if mine is a faulty piece or what ...It works great if:
1)you are not using refilled propane
2) you are using only the isopro 7.4 oz. cause for some reason mine does not work with the bigger capsules (I bought two and both had the same issue )
3)there is absolutely no wind !
4)you are not in high altitudes!
I'de love to see this product working and I was looking forward to buy it once I saw it on Backpackers magazine, But unfortunately it does not work the way I expected
Each of the little pads last about two hours so you pretty much need to put in a new one each time you use it, that is easy, and it is very easy on the fuel use- hardly uses any butane. If there is wind the unit is less effective but with no wind it definitely keeps the mosquitoes away, although I usually use deet also. It has no odor when running. The time I find it most useful is when I am eating while camping. If there is a table and you put it in the middle of the table the whole table is protected. Or if you are sitting on the ground just put it next to you. It also works if you put it under the table. Since this burns propane or butane obviously it is not for use in a closed space like a tent. I use it on my deck at home when eating and it is very useful there also. A friend with me on the cycle trip to Alaska had one that turned out not to work so be sure to test it out before you go of on an adventure. It weighs almost nothing and the fuel cans are not v heavy- the same ones I use for my backpacking stove.
