5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the motherboard gone?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 18, 2013
Using on a [[ASIN:B009GB87N6 Gigabyte Z77N-WIFI Motherboard (SKT 1155, Mini-ITX)]] with [[ASIN:B007RUZKK6 Intel 3rd Generation Core i5-3570K CPU (4 x 3.40GHz, Ivy Bridge, Socket 1155, 6Mb L3 Cache, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0)]] in an [[ASIN:B008M6THIU Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced USB 3.0 Mini ITX Case]]. The low profile is well suited to this typical combo giving 15mm clearance under the PSU. For reference Using the supplied TY-100, the top fan surface height above this Gigabyte motherboard top surface is 65mm (see photos). If you go for a bigger diameter fan there is an adapter plate which will add less than a mm to that if it is the same profile.

Noticeably quieter at idle, with lower CPU heatsink temps (31 deg, with unusual UK summer 2013 ambient of 27 at the moment) and can now run at full tilt avoiding the 70s now whereas the intel stock cooler was off into the 80s and beyond. You hear instant whirring up as you stress the CPU so it's not totally silent. The downdraught cools the motherboard too which is pretty much all of it as the total heat sink plan view almost fills the entire mini-ITX area. The six heatpipes lend a chromed beefy motorbike engine look to the whole affair.

You will need to access the underside of the motherboard as it uses a baseplate and nuts and bolts to attach so a good time to reorganise your cables. You get a big jangly bag of steel frames and fittings so spend some time sorting the parts you need for your CPU. Given the typical space constraints this will be used in I will say that it is good that it is designed so the upper body of the heatsink can be mounted in any one of the 90 degree orientations but for my Z77 mini-ITX motherboard only one orientation seemed possible with the 6 heat pipe bends pointing towards the GPU slot. On this motherboard I'm also glad I have low-profile RAM which I also advise should be in place first. Clearance is tight.

The cpu contact block is not pre coated with paste, but a generous syringe of CFII is supplied. Attaching the heatsink body to the CPU is done with a mounting plate and two screws which is the fiddly part, but I found best approach is to put the two screws in the clamping plate first, balance the plate with screws on the block, then offer up the loose assembly to the CPU. Otherwise Almost impossible to put the screws in last.

Pricy maybe but probably the one to beat now (summer 2013) for low-profile air cooling for tight mini-ITX applications that can't go the liquid route.
