Very powerful CPU cooler

I got this cooler based on a recommendation from somebody on an enthusiast forum.

When I got the part I was shocked at how big and heavy it was. Definitely a lot of metal in there for cooling!!

I am using this with an Intel i7 875k processor still at the stock 2.93GHz. I ran some tests on it to see how stable my system was after building and I ran all four cores at full 100% power using Prime95 software and was never able to get the CPU temp above 50C.

The only potential problem with this heatsink is that it can overhang the memory modules on the motherboard depending on the exact layout of your board. If you have some of the new highend RAM modules with large heat spreaders on them you may end up with an interference fit. I lucked out on mine, but that's the only issue I could possibly find with this thing.

Mine is cooling a i5 2400S. This is much more hardware than I needed.... The heatsink is huge. At 100% processor usage the fan seems to stay at its lowest setting. The sink is only slightly warm to the touch after hours of running. Measure twice for this monster, it won't fit in smaller cases. It may also cause problems on some motherboards that have components mounted very close to the processor socket. Mine is running very very quiet. Well made unit.

I have been using Thermalright coolers for years. After reading review after review on this model I thought I had another winner. Well for one of the more expensive cpu coolers on the market the performance is average at best. The first problem was one of the screws on the mounting system snapped. This rendered the cooler totally nonfunctional untill I could get a new bracket. You can do some google searching and see that this breaking of the bracket screw is a known issue. Second problem, took 4 phone calls, and 3 emails to Thermalright to get a new bracket sent to me. Their answer was "Amazon is not one of our authorized resalers so we do not offer warranty for that item" Well 5 stars to Amazon for sending me out a new replacement. I had given up on Thermalright but a week after my last email I got a replacement bracket. Third this thing is very heavy. It started to lean and bend my motherboard. I had to make a support bracket to keep it level. Finally it really does not cool all that much better. I had installed a Thermaltake red orb cpu cooler so I could get my new computer up and running. The temprature difference was only 2 degrees lower on the Thermalright side. The build quality, lack of customer service, massive weight come no where close justifying a 2 degree difference.

I purchased this cooler recently to replace the stock cooler on my Intel i7 920. The installation was relatively easy compared to coolers I've used in the past, but is still pretty involving. This isn't really an issue as you should know what to expect when ordering this type of product. The unit is quite large and you may have a hard time getting it into your case depending on its layout. I have a Lian-Li PC61 and I could not use my motherboard tray as I normally would. I had to gingerly mount the cooler on the CPU with the tray in the case as it was too tall to slide into it already mounted to the board. Once it's installed and in use it's great. It's not terribly loud and is well suited to its intended purpose. I am not trying to win any OC records, but I wanted to break the 3.0GHz barrier. I easily reached 3.2GHz without much effort and burnt it in with Prime95 for 9 hours. I never really went past 70 degrees Celsius at full load. That is considered somewhat high compared to other peoples experience with the same cooler, but the ambient temperature in my computer room is a lot higher that I would like and I think that is what is limiting my ability to reduce the temperature enough to OC it some more.

TL;DR

Price: A bit high.
Size: Pretty bulky.
Installation: Tedious, but better than others.
Performance: As expected.

All in all a good purchase and quality product.

Best mounting system I used yet. Performance is excellent. Have 2 Antec Tri Cool fans set to Med. and in this 85F degree apartment my max temps with prime is 60C (I5 750 at 3.2 Ghz). One more thing about the first reviewer on this page. The screws are not to be torqued down with brute force, just hand tight and just when you feel them bottom out. Even states this in the manual. Have the same cooler and have had no problems. Dont be a brute, its a computer not an engine!
