Product Description

Designed for overclocking. That is the motto for the all-new Thermaltake Frio enthusiats CPU cooler. To get the most out of today's high-end processors from Intel or AMD, most enthusiasts turn to after-market CPU coolers for the added cooling. Thermaltake engineers pulled out all of their big guns to ensure the most stable and highest overclocking potential. Equipped with two ISGC 120mm fans that allow fan speeds to be manually adjusted to best fit different system configurations. While most enthusiats coolers today uses 6mm heatpipes, the Frio comes with five massive 8mm heatpipes to quickly and efficiently move the heat away from CPU for proper cooling. Universal mounting kit supplied can support all of Intel Core i5 & i7 (six-core ready) as well as AMD Phenom & Phenom II processors.

I'd been hitting 90C with the stock Intel cooler that came with my i7-920, and running into occasional BSODs due to heat. After installing the Frio, the CPU core temps have never exceeded 50C. That's a FORTY degree Celsius decrease in operating temperature and the box is much more stable.

The fans are quite a bit louder than the stock cooler, but being able to overclock the CPU and FSB speeds makes up for it. Just crank the speakers up a little bit and you don't even notice.

Installation was easy, but you do need access to the back of the motherboard, so I'd recommend installing this at build time instead of retrofitting later like I did.

I upgraded my stock AMD heat sink and fan to make sure my processor runs nice and cool in case i want to overclock... Previously while playing Battlefield 3 i was getting about 55C on the CPU and 105F case temp. Now my case temp is lower (thanks to more air movement and i also added another 120mm fan to the case), and my CPU temp during heavy gaming never gets above 40C ...My processor is AMD Phenom II X6 1100T black.

Not an overclocker, but my core i7-2600 was always running hot with just the stock heatsink and fan that came with the chip. For a chip like the i7 which is prone to running hot, I don't know why intel would ship such a puny heatsink with it. When running some stress tests, my chip got up to 87 C in less than 2 minutes. Id' been looking at getting this particular cooler for a while because of the majority of positive reviews, great price, and great looks about it. Installation took me less than a half hour, and I didn't even have to remove my mother board thanks to the large cut out in the back of my Thermaltake Level 10GT case. This thing is HUGE. So meausre accordingly before you decide to purchase as it will likely cover up your first DIMM slot. I use corsair vengance high-profile RAM. So I was worried that this would be slightly too big, but on my EVGA Z68 motherboard, it fits perfectly--with literally only 1 millimeter of space between the edge of the fan and my first DIMM slot. However, if you have lower profile RAM, fitting it should not be a problem (but don't take my word for it. Especially if you DON'T have a full tower case).

After installation, ran the same stress test for over 15 minutes and never went over 47C. The thing works amazing! One thing I'm seeing people say a lot is that the fans are noisy. The fans are both VR. So they're only noisy when they're completely turned up on high. 'Thing sounds like it's gonna take off! But on the low setting, it couldn't be more silent. And with the fans on low, my temps still never went above 50C. Long story short: this thing rocks!

Large cooler, will probably block tall ram, make sure the width will no go over them before buying. My G.Skill Ripjaws just barely fit. Fans are both 3 pin? I read up on this first and was not mentioned in either of the pro reviews I read. ALL CPU fans should be 4 pin - allows much more control over them. I already had a fan controller so not a big deal to me. This is very loud when maxxed out - I can hear it from 30 feet away in another room - BUT it does cool extremely well. 4ghz AMD 1100t idles at under 25C, maxes out at 55C. This requires that you change the backplate on your motherboard to use it but it is very solidly held in place afterward. Recommended only for the overclocker club.

This has worked great for a few years now - mounted great on my motherboard - a "ASRock 890FX DELUXE5"
It comes right up to the edge of my left-most RAM, but it fits. I have a fan on the front of my case directly in line with this, so that blows air in, and these two keep it going straight out the back of my case keeping it quite cool - best airflow setup ever!

Only issue is that the fans mount to the heatsink strangely - not with screws but instead with these strange rubber plugs that were a little annoying. Definitely recommend mounting both fans on the heatsink before mounting it all to the motherboard.

I've been running my i7 920 on the stock heatsink and fan that it came with for the past four years. I never overclocked, so an aftermarket cooler wasn't necessary at the time. Now that the temps had gone up (around 90C), it was time to replace the unit. I had initially looked up this cooler on Newegg, but Amazon had it for a bit cheaper and faster shipping, so I purchased it on Amazon.

For all those who aren't aware after being warned by everyone else, this heatsink/fan combo is HUGE. It almost did not fit in my Antec 900 Case. Another annoyance is that the brackets included with it require it to be mounted from the underside of the motherboard. So to those who are thinking of updating the heatsink on their CPU, you must unscrew the motherboard and take it out in order to attach this cooler. Those of you who are building a new system, please keep this in your mind, or else you'll have to go back and unscrew your motherboard all over again.

The actual installation process was really easy after taking out the motherboard. All in all, it did not take more than an hour. There are different brackets included with the box for the different socket you will be using, so pay attention to which one you actually need. Thermal paste is included in the box, but I purchased my own (Arctic Silver).

After putting everything back together, my temps were dramatically reduced from around 90C~ to around 49C. All in all, a very good buy. I'll be monitoring how it does after I overclock it, but I doubt I'll have any issues. I give it a 5/5, just because it is doing what it is supposed to do. I would dock a star, but I was warned in advance that this thing is huge, so it was expected.
