I wish I bought this a year ago!

I have a high powered DEll XPS M170 with 17" monitor, and all that power packed into a notebook shell created a lot of heat which eventually led to #1. the glue that holds the rubber stoppers in place melting and resulting in a uncleanable mess on my $2,000 couch (and no rubber stoppers anymore). #2. A few components on my mother board got fried leading to it not recognizing my AC adapter which made me responsible for a powerjack repair. #3. A very uncomfortable feeling of high heat burning my legs with imprints of the undercarriage if I wore shorts while using it.

I didn't realize laptop coolers were a necessity until I had a $3,000 laptop give me these problems.

What makes this such a great product is a boxy, metal, cumbersome, battery draining usb cooler is not practical and not portable, and this one is portable enough to slip in my targus laptop bag. This product has completely removed the "steaming hot" feeling from my laptop and now at worst it just gets warm. In fact I've had it fired up for over 2 hours on my lap, and the inside of the mat never turned to complete liquid, it stayed about half liquid/half solid proving it still had more cooling time to give me. However, if you are going to be using this for 10 hours a day on your lap, I'd recommend buying 2.

There is only one flaw with this cooler but it's not enough to make me subtract a star from the rating: It's surface is slick. Don't even try to go diagonal with your laptop because it will slide off this pad quickly. Since my rubber stoppers no longer exist, that may be just as responsible for the slickness, but just running your hand across the surface makes it obvious it has little to no grip. Still an amazing product I would recomend to anybody!

For 2 to 3 hours of laptop use, this is great

I have a mechanical fan laptop cooler for home use but I needed one for the road as I suddenly needed to bring my laptop to a job on a daily basis. A lightweight laptop cooler was something I was looking for and this seemed to be worth a try.

The laptop is definitely cooler with this pad than the fan cooler at home. The crystal concoction in the pad really wicks the heat away as it liquifies. The temperature sensors in my laptop stay low for about two to three hours until the crystals have completely liquified and then the computer heats up but not as much as if there wasn't a pad. At this point it's better than passive cooling on a stand but not better than fan cooling. The pad now acts more as a soft lap protector. If you are planning to use your laptop for extended sessions, a mechanical fan cooler is a better choice.

The crystals liquify slowly but return to a solid state quickly after the heat source is removed. However not quickly enough if you turn the laptop off and immediately pack everything in a laptop bag to leave. The liquid flows to one side and you end up with an uneven pad when it solidifies. I roll up the pad before packing it and this sort of helps but it works better if you can let the pad cool solid before packing it into your briefcase, knapsack, etc.

Notebook Cooler

I have two laptops at home and they both seem to run hot with the fans going full blast all day. I have been looking for a notebook cooler that I could sit under a laptop that would blow air underneath and cool them off a little. At least that is what I thought until I kept reading reviews of these devices and how the fans would quit working after a while or the fans would blow up the USB port on the laptop they were powering from. Then I ran across this particular cooler - no power to worry about. Just set your laptop on the top and it would suck away the heat from your laptop and make it run cooler.

I was skeptical until I started google for reviews on this cooler pad. I found many technical reviews that all raved about this particular product and they even provided tests that showed how the actual temperature of the computer processor and hard drives were running cooler with the pad underneath. Apparently, the pad has some kind of substance inside that is solid when it is cold, but turns to a liquid when it gets hot and it sucks away heat when in this mode. I bought one to try with my Dell 17-inch laptop. It came a few days later and I slipped it under and it is really amazing. The fan operates at a lot slower speed than it used to (meaning the laptop is not as hot) and sometimes it doesn't even turn on for long periods of time.

I wondered about my other laptop which has intake vents on the bottom. I was worried that the vents would be covered by the pad and stop airflow. But this isn't the case. The top is dimpled and the laptop still has airflow around the intake - at least on my HP laptop. One laptop is 15 inches and the other is 17 inches and this pad works for both.
