This is the best water bottle on the market for keeping your water cold and fresh all day long. I had my first Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Hydration Bottle for 4 1/2 months of constant daily use until I accidentally left it behind while running an errand. After realizing it was gone forever I immediately got on amazon and ordered another. I am a very thrifty person and to spend nearly $20 on a water bottle not once but TWICE shows you how much I love this product. The simple design of the extraordinary features of this water bottle makes it worth its weight in gold.
Features:
-The bottle is truly leak proof. I have tossed it on the floor of my car a few times and had it rolling around while driving and did not have a single drop leak. During the 4 1/2 months of daily use with this water bottle I did not have any problems with the O-ring as others have mentioned in their reviews. I only hand-wash my bottle and lid (I use
OXO Good Grips Bottle Brush
to clean all the way inside the bottle where a hand cannot reach) and I wonder if some people with O-ring difficulties may have used a dishwasher.
-It keeps your water cold for many hours. Even without adding ice cubes your water is going to be cold for AT LEAST 5 times as long as a plastic water bottle holding water the same temperature as the Thermos Nissan. I have found that the best way to keep your water cold for an extended period of time is to follow the Thermos directions and pre-fill your bottle with very cold water and let it sit for a few minutes(I just use tap water for this). Then dump out that water and fill with fresh cold water (I use water from
PUR 18 Cup Dispenser with One Pitcher Filter DS-1800Z
that I keep in the fridge). This ensures your water will stay cold for hours, even when left in a hot car. I have never used my bottle for anything other than water, but from the other reviews people have written it seems it will keep any cold beverage you put in it cold for hours.
-The flip top is genius. Both the top and spout are made of a fairly thick plastic (not the cheap water bottle plastic that distorts/gets bite marks/scratches on it easily) I love the fact that it seals very tighly yet opens very easily using only one hand. The top completely covers the water spout to prevent contamination/dirt/grass/who knows what from getting on the spout part that you put your mouth on. You simply press a button to flip the top open. There is a small metal ring that lifts over the top of the button to prevent accidental openings. When you press the button to open the bottle it does make a "pop" sound that may be distracting for some people but does not bother me at all.
-The size of the water spout is just slightly larger than a conventional 16.9 ounce disposable plastic water bottle spout. Drinking from the bottle is very natural and you simply tilt the bottle back with the spout resting gently against your lips and have gravity do all the work. The small size of the spout makes drinking water while driving, walking, running, etc. simple. With other water bottles with a wide spout you are almost guarenteed to dump water down the front of you if taking a sip while actively engaged in something else. The size of the spout is not so small that it is difficult to clean. I typically take a paper towel that I dampen with soap and water and pass it through the spout several times to get it clean. You could probably also use a thin dishrag to the same effect.
-The bottle is a good size and shape. I sometimes find myself wishing it held more than 18 ounces (particularly in the scorching summer heat) but in general 18 ounces is perfect to carry around with you everywhere and refill as needed. The non-slip grip in the center of the bottle makes it very easy to hold. The bottle itself does not sweat at all, but sometimes my hands will sweat while active or out in the heat and the grip makes it easier to hold onto the stainless steel. The bottle is not as heavy as it looks. Granted, it is certainly heavier than a plastic water bottle of a simiiar size but is completely manageable and I don't even notice the added weight. The bottle fits into standard car cup holders. I can also attest that the bottle holds its shape well as I have dropped it several times from a height of about 3 feet onto carpet, tile, and vinyl flooring and did not have it dent. However, if you drop it from high enough I am sure it would probably dent, so use care.
Use with kids:
I do not have children of my own, but I frequently babysit and when I bring my water bottle along the kids are always curious and interested in it. I have seen kids as young as 2 1/2-years-old be able to handle, carry, open, and drink from the bottle with ease (however, I would say the bottle would probably best suit kids 4 years of age and up). They think it looks cool and enjoy pushing the button to open the bottle and love hearing the "pop" sound the top makes as it opens. Some of the kids I babysit for who live off of juice and milk and would normally rather go thirsty than drink plain water will take my bottle from me as soon as I walk in the door and sip on it all day long, happily ignoring their fridges full of juice boxes. I now have to hide it in my bag in order to keep my precious bottle away from sticky fingers and backwashed goldfish crackers. I feel that this water bottle would be a good purchase for parents with children looking for a bottle that children can easily handle and drink from that will keep their drinks cold (I'm sure it would work great to keep milk safe, fresh, and cold for those children who like to sip on their milk slowly rather than drink it all at once or when traveling with a little one. No more having to waste money and dump milk down the drain that your child left out on the table for too long). Another big plus with using this bottle for children is that it is actually leak proof. So long as the kids understand how to close the top you won't have to worry about it leaking even when knocked on it's side or hanging upside down. Another big plus is that it is easy to clean without any difficult straws or oddly shaped sippy tips to worry about collecting germs. The only negatives I can think of for using this bottle with children is its size and weight. The 18 ounce size is simply too large for younger children's needs. The weight of the bottle should be fine for around the house but an adult will probably need to carry it for the child when out and about or on trips. Also, I could see this bottle being used by a child to hit a sibling or other child in anger. Although children could do this with any bottle they happen to have in their hands, the additional size and weight of this bottle has the potential to cause more damage and may not be a good idea for most kids under 4-5 or even an older kid who may be a bit more impulsive and likely to throw/hit with the bottle in frustration.
All things considered, the Thermos Nissan Hydration bottle goes with me everywhere and is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I have seen this bottle for sale in a few local stores and it is always sold at MSRP so buying from amazon is the best deal I have seen on this amazing water bottle. I have told all my friends and family about this bottle and plan to gift it for birthdays/Christmas in the future. It has led to me drinking more water and less soda and juices. I recommend this bottle to everyone who enjoys drinking cold water and for those who want to start drinking more water regularly.
