From the Back Cover
Fifteen-year-old Laura lives apart from her family for the first time, teaching school in a claim shanty twelve miles from home. She is very homesick, but keeps at it so that she can help pay for her sister Mary's tuition at the college for the blind. During school vacations Laura has fun with her singing lessons, going on sleigh rides, and best of all, helping Almanzo Wilder drive his new buggy. Friendship soon turns to love for Laura and Almanzo in the romantic conclusion of this Little House book.
About the Author
Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.
Garth Williams is the renowned illustrator of almost one hundred books for children, including the beloved Stuart Little by E. B. White, Bedtime for Frances by Russell Hoban, and the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
He was born in 1912 in New York City but raised in England. He founded an art school near London and served with the British Red Cross Civilian Defense during World War II. Williams worked as a portrait sculptor, art director, and magazine artist before doing his first book Stuart Little, thus beginning a long and lustrous career illustrating some of the best known children's books.
In addition to illustrating works by White and Wilder, he also illustrated George Selden’s The Cricket in Times Square and its sequels (Farrar Straus Giroux). He created the character and pictures for the first book in the Frances series by Russell Hoban (HarperCollins) and the first books in the Miss Bianca series by Margery Sharp (Little, Brown). He collaborated with Margaret Wise Brown on her Little Golden Books titles Home for a Bunny and Little Fur Family, among others, and with Jack Prelutsky on two poetry collections published by Greenwillow: Ride a Purple Pelican and Beneath a Blue Umbrella. He also wrote and illustrated seven books on his own, including Baby Farm Animals (Little Golden Books) and The Rabbits’ Wedding (HarperCollins).

These Happy Golden Years Book Review
The Whole Family

About the author

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in the Wisconsin woods in 1867. She wrote the Little House books based on her own experiences growing up on the Western frontier. Just like the characters in her stories, Laura and her family traveled by covered wagon across the Midwest and experienced many of the same adventures. She finally settled down in Mansfield, Missouri with her husband, Almanzo, where she lived until her death in 1957.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024This version in the Little House series follows the first years of marriage between Laura and Almonzo. An engaging story as always
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2024I ended up buying the entire 9 hardcover book series and find they are the perfect size to make a nice display on my shelf. Print quality is nice, and the typeface is easy to read. I'm in my 40s and have loved the TV series since the 80s and find myself rewatching the episodes on Amazon Prime which has sparked my interest to finally sit down to read the books.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024Book was new and exactly as described. My girl and I love the Laura Ingalls collection. This is the first time reading it and it does have a shocking event that is creepy and terrifying! Beware if reading it to the younger child. I really loved the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2014This account of life on a claim in the South Dakota prairie in the mid 1880s was written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. In the book, she tells of her teenage years as she grew from a child to a young lady, and from teacher to wife. The reader learns much about the hard times and the good family life that carries them on.
When she started teaching in the one room school, some of her pupils were older than her, so she has a struggle teaching and keeping discipline. As the school was several miles from her home, she had to live with the family of the school board and his bitter wife, who wanted to go back east. She is glad when Almanzo Wilder takes her home each weekend in the cold winter afternoons. After the two months teaching, she contributed the $40 she earned to her family to keep her blind sister, Mary, in college.
Eventually, at the age of 18, she marries Almanzo Wilder, who is about 10 years older that her.
This a good story of life on the Dakota prairies, the hardships, and the determination of the few settlers to survive on their claims. I would recommend this book to others.
By James Hall, age 9.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2007Although the "Little House" books do not appear to be quite as popular as they were a couple of decades ago, I shared all the books with my grandchildren in the form of audio books. We would listen to them as we drove on both long and short rides. They, and I, enjoyed the first three books(Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek) but then felt the next three were just fair to listen to. When I first started These Happy Golden Years, I heard a grumble or two from the g'kids, but as the story unfolded their listening delight picked up. Soon they were begging me to drive the longer way home so they could find out what happened next. These Happy Golden Years is a sweet love story full of interesting historical facts, plus enough action to keep my grandson interested. The only flaw we found with the audio version of the book is the singing of the actor (Cherry Jones) that did the reading. It was a bit grating at times when she pretended to sing as Pa. (Poor Ma if Pa really sang like that) Other than that it is a five star recommendation.
