Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Based on the real-life exploits of the author's great-grandmother, this fictionalized diary vividly details one woman's struggles with life and love in frontier Arizona at the end of the last century. When she begins recording her life, Sarah Prine is an intelligent, headstrong 18-year-old capable of holding her own on her family's settlement near Tucson. Her skill with a rifle fends off a constant barrage of Indian attacks and outlaw assaults. It also attracts a handsome Army captain named Jack Elliot. By the time she's 21, Sarah has recorded her loveless marriage to a family friend, the establishment of a profitable ranch, the birth of her first child?and the death of her husband. The love between Jack and Sarah, which dominates the rest of the tale, has begun to blossom. Fragmented and disjointed in its early chapters, with poor spelling and grammar, Sarah's journal gradually gains in clarity and eloquence as she matures. While this device may frustrate some readers at first, Taylor's deft progression produces the intended reward: she not only tells of her heroine's growth, but she shows it through Sarah's writing and insights. The result is a compelling portrait of an enduring love, the rough old West and a memorable pioneer. First serial to Good Housekeeping; author tour; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selections. (Feb.) FYI: Selected as the March 1998 Good Housekeeping "Novel of the Month."

From School Library Journal

YA-This novel in diary format parallels the early history of the Arizona Territories as Sarah and her family travel from the New Mexico Territory and settle down to carve out a new life on a ranch near Tucson in the 1880s. Sarah's diary, based on the author's family memoirs, is a heartwarming and heartbreaking fictional account of a vibrant and gifted young woman. Sarah starts out as an illiterate, fiery 17 year old. Eventually, her writing becomes as smooth and polished as Sarah herself as she becomes a tenacious, literate, and loving wife and mother. A treasure trove of discovered books becomes the source of her self-education. Turner describes the trip in such detail that one has a sense of having traveled with Sarah, experiencing all of its heartache and sadness, its backbreaking exertion and struggles, its danger and adventure, its gentle and lighter moments. Life in the new country brings the constant fear of Indian raids and the threat and reality of floods, fire, and rattlesnakes; bandits; rough men, and pretentious women all have an effect on the protagonist but her strong marriage makes the effort worthwhile. Sarah centers her world around her home and family but maintains an independent spirit that keeps her whole and alive throughout her many trials and heartaches. This is a beautifully written book that quickly captures readers' attention and holds it tightly and emotionally until the end.

I have read this one twice and both times thoroughly enjoyed it. I love that the writing style develops and changes as the FMC grows and develops. The author does such a good job of developing a story that is captivating and characters that you root for. The character of Sarah Prine is the kind of strong female character that we need to see more of.

Incredible story telling in the form of a diary makes this novel feel so real, as if it were a memoir. Perhaps some of that feeling is because the book was inspired by the author’s great grandmother. For me that made it all the more meaningful. I always love reading about strong women no matter when they lived, but there is something particularly special about Sarah Agnes Prine as we follow her and her family and others on their journey to stake a claim in Arizona Territory in the late nineteenth century. What a fabulous character! Sarah is courageous, sometimes audacious, smart and loving. And what reader wouldn’t appreciate someone with a burning desire to read. If I lived there and then, I’d want her to be my friend, although it would have been awkward because I fell in love with the love of her life Captain Jack Elliott, too.

There are some beautiful things about this story - love of family, cherished friendships and a love story that I’ll remember. In spite of all of those things, this is difficult to read a lot of the time as it depicts the hardships and loss on the journey and the hardships that continue for Sarah and her family after they stake claim. There are brutal scenes of death, sometimes gruesome, in conflicts with Native Americans and a few vile men. There is sickness and death, and amazingly enough there is also some humor to provide a reprieve from the suffering. A fabulous character to admire and remember and an excellent work of historical fiction. Looking forward to the other two books in the series.

I loved this so much I can't even describe. I love the whole story and especially Sarah..I fell in love with her and admire her and found her to be incredibly inspirational..I live in Tucson and was thrilled to read about places I'm familiar with and to imagine it in those times. I have a farm animal sanctuary and can relate to all the animal care and relationships. I think what is also so amazing is what an exciting and even emotional journey it was with all elements you would want to read about however wow a change in three days to find the romance was lovely yet clean and the violence was exciting and very necessary, the losses were not so in depth that i was left depressed and the shady characters were the shady characters but not not the main ones, the men were trust worthy and good and I really appreciated that. It felt good and safe, was not a stressful read but still so exciting and interesting! I didn't want it to end and was thrilled to read the next one and even more wonderful was that she just released "light changes everything" recently, which is based on the main character, Sarah's neice, my other favorite gun toting sure shot of a gal) Mary Pearl! I read everything Nancy E Turner has written in under two months starting with this one. I only wish there were more.. They are tough and funny characters, loving and smart and honest, you just want to know them and keep them around..❤️

This book had two things against it when I started reading. I abhor reading poor grammar no matter how appropriate it is for the character. I also dislike things written in diary form. Or so I thought. This book had big shoes to fill. Huge shoes. My favorite historical fiction since reading that age 12 has been the book by Bess Streeter Aldrich about the western journey of Abbie Mackenzie Deal - A Lantern in Her Hand. Holy Moley this book had me enrapt from the first few pages.
Sarah’s journey begins on a wagon train and ends when she leaves a stone house for her ranch. All of the trials and joys in between show the growth of a young girl to womanhood. And through it all, the love for her Captain Jack. So good. A great depiction of life on the early Arizona frontier. And a heart stopping encounter with a rattler. I don’t want to delve into spoilers because I want new readers to pick their way through on their own. And you won’t be sorry.

I love the West particularly Arizona, so this book is definitely up my alley. I have bought at least 5 copies because my house guests start reading it while they are at my house vacationing and take it with them to finish. The words and events have a great flow. May or may not be exactly historically accurate but it is very enjoyable and easy to read.

Agree with all the five star reviews. Would have liked to have Twobuddy, too, settling on the farm, in the end. After all, he saved Captain Elliots live, and Bear is there, too. Doesn't seem to be fair, but I know Sarah would not have judged that prio one in her Situation and even really possible. Other than that, a great story!
