1880s, The Wild West.

An easy, solitary life on the outskirts of Ghosthallow is all Lou Ramirez wants. They want to buy some house plans, build a home, and live their quiet life far from townsfolk’s prying eyes. But somehow instead of house plans, a housewife is delivered to their door.

Clementine Castellanos desperately needs a way out from under her family debt, and it seems as though selling her services as a wife is the only way to do it. Expecting a rough, harsh man to be her new husband, Clementine is pleasantly surprised to instead be dropped off at the ranch of an equally surprised Lou.

Lou would rather Clementine leave them to their lonely existence, but Clementine is too charmed by the quiet and mysterious rancher to give up. She may have come into Lou’s life easily, but she certainly isn’t planning to leave that way. Undeterred by Lou’s prickly demeanor, Clementine is determined to get her reluctant spouse to open up to her.

When the past comes back to haunt the pair, the fight for their independence—and their love—may become more deadly than either of them ever expected.

A great, slow burn historical lovestory set in the old west with a non-binary lesbian and a pansexual woman. I loved how the story developed, how the main characters grew together and I liked the actions and how the secrets were unraveled little by little. For me this was always a fascinating time and place in American history and I am so glad I found this book and this author.

Lou lives by themself on their ranch. Hiding from people who want to hurt them. One day, expecting house plans and building materials, instead a woman departs the wagon saying she was a bought wife Clementine. She is the most beautiful woman they have ever seen, and Lou is the handsomest person Clementine has ever seen. But before anything happens, there is a lot they both have to get through. A page turner! 5 stars!

I was very disappointed in this story
I usually enjoy westerns but this book was so repetitive and the plot twists just didn’t make sense to me
I want to support new authors but I don’t think I’ll spend more money regardless of the reviews

Q*eer westerns will always have my heart. The moment I saw this, I smashed the download button so fast and I got exactly what I wanted. Lou lives a solitary life outside of an outlaw town. A town where everyone has secrets and nobody asks questions. This is the way they like their life. But one day, a delivery error drops a mail-order-bride on their doorstep - Clementine Castellanos. She’s not meant for Lou, but that doesn’t stop the plot from a-rolling - if you catch my drift. Clementine and Lou are the sweetest of pairings. And while Lou is running from their past to set up a stable life for themselves, Clementine is running towards the secrets from her past for her own reasons. Clem also might be a softy, but she’s still a Pan icon who takes no BS. It also takes them a hot minute to admit the depth of their feelings for each other, when they do - oh it is so very worth it. The only thing I wish would have been developed more was the setting. Instead of feeling like a specific western town with a historical time and place, it felt more like it could have been dropped down just about anywhere and set in almost any late 1800s decade. I think if the author had chosen a specific town or even a fictional town near a known location and used that location to enrich the story, it would have been: *chef’s kiss* perfection. But don’t let that generic western setting put you off, the characters more than make up for it and I would read all the more about Lou and Clementine’s relationship every day of the week.

For both of the main characters life has been tough. Lou Ramirez grew up in a time when the only thing known about the LGBTQIA was as the locals would say ‘stay away from him/her’. The only ones in Ghosthallow that treated them with respect are the local women who worked in the saloon. All Lou wanted was a safe place to live, hopefully no one would come looking for them. Apparently there was a reward to the person that can bring Lou to the authorities. They have the wrong info but that didn’t matter, all they wanted was the reward.
Clementine Castellanos' life wasn’t much better. She was only six when her father, along with her sisters were killed. Clem was taken to their camp, where she grew up working or should I say forced to work around the camp. Finally she is able to get away, by marrying the ‘old guy’ who paid for her. Lou comes to her rescue by paying off the ‘old guy’ and giving her a place to live. At the same time Lou just wanted to be left alone, all Clem wants is to stay with Lou. Now both are trying to just live but it seems the authorities aren’t done with them yet.
Fast paced, lots of action and good characters both, main and supporting cast make this a very enjoyable read.

They Ain't Proper is a great historical sapphic book about a non-binary lesbian and a pansexual woman. There is a mix-up with an order, and a mail-ordered bride turns up at Lou's ranch instead of house plans and gear to build it. Instead of taking Clementine back to the man who brought her, who is a mean, nasty old man, Lou pays Clem's debts and they take her back home.

Lou does everything they can to pass off Clem's advantages, even though they do think very highly of her, but they don't want to un-proper. Not to mention they have a past that is coming to the point that is becoming dangerous for both of them. Clem has a past of her own, in which she sold herself to be a bride to pay back what her father owed. She is also looking for her sister and revenge, but her most important job is to get Lou to kiss her.

This book is great, and I really enjoyed reading about a non-binary main character who likes their ladies. I liked the plot, it was engaging and had twists that kept you entertained. The spice when it got there, was very hot. I recommend this book to all.
