Underage for the Navy, young Ken Mason, impressionable and adventurous, enlists in the United States Maritime Service and undergoes radio operator training during the summer after graduating from high school. For the past year and currently, Nazi U-boats in a feeding frenzy are sinking dozens of ships up and down the US East Coast and far out to sea. Ken, whose father is a New York admiralty lawyer, has, in his father's words "run away to sea," survives a convoy run across the Atlantic to England. He ships out again upon his return to New York. As the assemblage of ships disappears over the eastern horizon on its way to England, Ken Mason and his shipmates must now face the U-boat menace in the bloody North Atlantic Ocean. This time his ship, however, damaged during a storm, must drop out of the convoy, and return to Halifax, Nova Scotia, for repairs. But, forebodingly, the newly launched SS Orion Victory is not alone. She is being stalked by U-218, in the deadly periscope crosshairs of a soon-to-be submarine ace, Kapitänleutnant Walther Starken, better known to the U.S. Navy's COMEASTSEAFRON as "Iron Cross Wally."

The Men of World War II Who Went To Sea

David Arturi's "They Go To Sea" is a fine work of historical fiction describing the war efforts and risks of the Merchant Marines during World War II. Most of the chapters have an interesting authentic photograph or poster from the period. Also included are quotes about the heroic efforts of the merchant seamen from FDR, Eisenhower, Churchill and others. Arturi dedicates his story to the Merchant Marine and the U.S. Naval Guard who served on these dangerous voyages to bring supplies to the Allies. He notes the huge fatality ratio of the merchant seamen and that their stories and sacrifices have been largely ignored.
The narrative intertwines a young man's coming of age tale into the vividly described main story of a North Atlantic crossing by a convoy of ships. Arturi introduces other well-developed characters into the story to broaden the reader's view of the merchant seaman at sea and on land. Brief views of 1940's New York City are represented as well. Interestingly, besides bringing to life the days and nights of the men on a U.S. merchant ship, the omniscient narrator allows the reader a view of a German U-boat and its men. This novel will have great appeal to anyone with a family member who served at sea during World War II or an interest in an often overlooked area of World War II history.
My father was torpedoed in the North Atlantic in February 1943 and survived for almost 3 weeks on a lifeboat before being rescued. In the 1990's, we visited the Liberty Ship S.S. Jeremiah O'Brian in San Francisco. I saw the gun turrets, bridge, radio shack, engine room and living quarters and had a glimpse of my father's life during the war.
Arturi's novel is a good read and provided me with a greater understanding of my father and the other men of World War II who went to sea.

David Arturi, author of the novel They Go To Sea,engages the reader in a literary journey within the genrè of Historical Fiction. Skillfully reticulated throughout the novel is a well-documented account of the Merchant Marine Service during WW II. This is a history unknown to many beginning with ship building to unescorted convoys with descriptive events of the many ships and men torpedoed into extinction. As the maritime history unravels, the fiction is a woven fabric of the main character, Ken Mason. The reader travels with Ken from his youth, with the desire to sail the seas, through his radio-telegraph education, and his early apprenticeship, which leads to an initiation of youth to manhood through an existential death. He witnesses the deaths of too many fellow Merchant Marine seamen resulting from the ineptness of the US Navy Admiralty in charge of sea operations as a one of many historical parallels from the WWII Sea Chronicles. The author's unique style presents a well-developed novel loaded with little known sea events from this time period. The fictional elements are embellishments and the personal life events in Ken Mason's growth. His journeys to and away from lovers, family ties with many attached strings, produce an enigma within Ken. He is not only engaged in sea battles, but is encountering the battle of inner conflicts trying to understand his place in the universe as well as staying alive.
