This collection has a little bit of something for everyone. The author starts us of with one of the best intros that I have ever read (it was seductive and intriguing) and leads us right into her expertly woven tales of horror with The Lazarus Antidote. If you think you’ve read every imaginable zombie scenario and “end of life as we know it” plot line there is… hold on to your seat, because you are in for a real treat!
I was glued to every story from the time I picked this up until the very last word of the last story. One of my favorites was Best Friends Forever. This is told through a series of letters from a woman stalking another woman, snippets from the victim and journal entries. This story is incredibly intense and deviates from a typical story structure to take the reader right into the minds of both the stalker and the victim.
Mixed in with the horror are bits and pieces of humor, that might seem out of place, but blend into the stories perfectly and help to bring down your heart rate for just a moment before the author plunges you back into the throes of horror again. Friendship, medical mishaps, hauntings, and monsters….OH MY! Every story contained in this collection is well written and touches on a different theme, but they blend so well together.
This is a must read for your Halloween season enjoyment! Prepared to be scared and have a whole lot of fun while reading this.
I enjoyed every single story. I think a testament of good writing lies in how a reader feels about the ending of the stories. At every conclusion, I found myself wanting more. In my mind, I hoped that Ms. Connor decided to develop a few tales into full-length novels. The most intriguing story for me was "The Apple", a touching story about a little girl growing up in a rough neighborhood who befriends a homeless woman. My other favorite story was "The Christmas Wish", a tale where you definitely didn't want to be on Santa's naughty list. Christmas is my favorite holiday (in a very obsessive-compulsive kind of way that might be proof that I need help), and I love anything affiliated with this time of the year, even if it is scary. Additionally, I loved that Ms. Connor is a Veteran. I'm a Veteran with a background in Public Health, and enjoy reading anything involving epidemics or the military. She seamlessly incorporates the two into several stories.
If you are a fan of the horror genre, don't miss out on this collection of short stories. Take it from this scary chicken. You won't be disappointed.
