The characters are well-developed and the protagonist is compelling, someone a reader really wants to spend time with. The story line of the murder and its investigation has enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing right up to the morally complex ending. The story line of the political campaign, which becomes entwined with the murder investigation, is insightful and fascinating. And throughout, whether it is the depiction of the emotional aftermath of the murder of a child or the description of the strategies involved in a political campaign, it all rings true and real.
I highly recommend They Tell Me You Are Wicked to anyone who is looking for a well-written and thoughtful crime novel with a terrific story told in a new voice.
Duncan Cochrane wanted to be governor, or rather his wife wanted him in office because she never thought she could make it herself. When his daughter is murdered in her bedroom though, he doesn't know what to do. After witnessing the investigation of her murder first hand, he knows that he needs to become governor in order to crack down on the justice system and continues his campaign with crime fighting as his main focus. But could this focus be to his own detriment?
First off, I did not see this coming. That’s all I’m going to say so as not to give the book away. What a fantastic read! I loved it from page one and highly recommend this book. It is well written and thought out. The characters are believable and the story flows without unnecessary words and descriptions that seem more “word count” then helpful to the story. David Hagerty is an author worth in vesting in.
