I've loved the entire series so far, which, I am so sad to say, is the only reason this got a three star.
This fluff really felt as though it was a prompted fanfic. Gratuitous in content. I adored this series for the plot, the world building, the character building. It has always been so.. heavy, and strong. I have been nothing but impressed. Until Smoke & Mirrors, and Thick & Thin. The last two novels seemed to have lacked content, and have been more internal monologue, and characters confessing their inner monologues. There WAS plot movement in this book. But it truly felt as though it didn't justify the full length novel it was given. I WON'T give up on this series, because I think Charlie Cochet is a marvelous author. I won't lie, there were a few times my breath caught, when I saw how far through I was, an got scared everything would be crammed into the last few chapters - it wasn't. It just wasn't there. Okay, maybe at this point I am just repeating myself. I am not trying to be harsh, but I was feeling quite... bereft, after this. Please excuse MY monologue.
Ready for plot, ready for action, ready for what made this series great to begin with.
Definitely waiting with bated breath for the next installation.
Then Sloane proposed.
And Dex’s father Tony Maddock is recovering from his gunshot wound.
And Ash Keeler admits that he loves Cael Maddock, Dex’s brother.
And the scarey cougar boss lady Sonya Sparks has recruited Dex and Sloane for TIN—Therian Intelligence Network
Aside from hunting for two rogue Therians in Greenpoint and getting glimpses of a conspiracy afoot regarding Hudson Colbourn (the medical examiner), this is just the next chapter in the saga of our favorite butch couple in a quasi-dystopian NY. It’s fun. Cochet writes this stuff really well, and keeps her huge array of characters clear in her mind and ours.
For one, I liked Dex's freak outs, and I enjoyed seeing him with his Therian qualities.
And, I was very happy that Dex's being okay with Sparks and Tony was explained, because that didn't make ANY SENSE AT ALL. Though, I will say, the author isn't very consistent with that. Given that we see things from Dex's point of view, it was too much of a surprise. It's one thing to try for a twist, but this felt more like maybe the author had realized how little sense it made after the fact.
Lots of things bugged me, but at this point, I just go with it. They're fun, quick read that require little brain-power, which is sometimes what you want.
I will say, that I'm really on the fence about Seb and Hudson's book next. I love Seb, but I find Hudson I total drag. Partially because the author writes him like she's worried we may forget he's British, and uses every British phrase she can, which makes him sound like a complete tool and not at all like a real human. Not sure I can take a whole book of his terrible dialogue.
Seb and Hudson finally get their story, which I can't wait and I can't wait for what's in store for our team. If you haven't read THIRDS yet, what are you waiting for?
