I love stealth games and this series is what started me on them. I've played all of the games in the Thief franchise and my quick summary:
"Is it as good as the original?"
"Is it still a good Thief game?"
"Would i buy it again if I could do it over?"
The voice acting starts off a little slow and in my opinion, did not match the anti-hero darkness of Garret as I remembered him. However, once you get through the first chapter the game opens up and everything gets a lot better. In between chapters you have side mission you can get from your fence and a whole non-liner world to explore and steal from. In the chapters, it does become more liner but the game really rewards you for exploring. You can find hidden rooms and paths that lead you to new puzzles and treasures.
So far, it's a great game and different from anything else out there.
One thing I forgot to mention. There is a level with full on nudity in this game. Bare breasts and something akin to soft core porn.
The atmosphere, on the whole, has been preserved. By atmosphere I mean the look of the city, the haunting background noises, the first person aspect, and the 'treasure hunt' feel as you loot your way through each mission. Square Enix could have easily messed this portion of the game up, but they wisely preserved it. In short, it feels like a Thief game!
They kept the scary aspects of the series. Although I am disappointed that there are no zombies, the supernatural enemies you run into are creepy in their own right. I was thrilled that they included a 'haunted' level that made the Thief series shine. There are truly some scary moments in the game.
The ability to customize almost every stat-based feature of the game adds to the difficulty and overall fun of the game. I loved how they game keep track of the 3 play styles (Ghost, Opportunist, Predator), as these were once invisible community standards of how one could play Thief. Those who never played Thief will probably finish missions as a Predator, since it involves less patience and panders to the 'first person shooter' genre. Although this isn't an illegitimate style, the game really shines when one attempts to finish a mission as a Ghost.Read more ›
If you enjoy stealth games, and good stealth games at that, you will enjoy this. If you want to run in guns blazing killing everyone in sight, this is not the game you are looking for. This game is best enjoyed slowly. Turn off the lights, turn up the sound, and immerse yourself. Become the master Thief. What's yours is mine. That's what games like this are all about. Getting past a dozen armed guards, cracking the safe, looting the mansion, and sneaking out again without anyone knowing you were even there. This game does this, and does it well. If you'd like a challenging and fun stealth game, give Thief a chance.
This is also the only game in the series I've played (I think it's a series, anyway), so I can't comment on its similarities/differences. As a stand-alone, I can say that it delivers very well.

The gameplay is repetitive and the story is lackluster. No new mechanics are introduced, and you are not sufficiently motivated to continue.Published 1 month ago by Amazon Customer

Excellent game, feels very much in line with the previous games. I miss the original voice actor for Garrett (Stephen Russell) - their decision not to cast him was a mistake. Read morePublished 5 months ago by Rick
